1 Learning objective: To understand the structure of an editorial article. DO NOW: Find all of the conjunctions in the editorial articles in your big booklets. Write them on the board in my board marker pens below. Literacy objective: To develop our proofreading skills.

2 Personalised question. Read the first article. A: What is the purpose of the conjunctions in the article? B: Do all the conjunctions do the same job in the writing? C: What do you notice about the punctuation when a conjunction occurs. Are there any patterns?

3 Look at your Success Criteria sheet Here you will see some of the conjunction ideas we have discussed summarised in the top box. Your homework is to do the same thing for the sentence variation and sentence openings work we did on Monday and create a new box called purpose and audience and fill it in to summarise our work from yesterday.

4 In groups of - 4 max mixed whare and mixed gender Look at the cards you have been given and, using the editorial articles in the big booklet, put them in the order they might be written in. Now label them using the coloured arrows.

5 DO NOW:

6 Now add conjunctions Now insert conjunctions to link the paragraphs together logically. You might need to change a few other words to make it fit.

7 Back page of big booklet Complete the back page of the big booklet to summarise the structure of an editorial as we have discussed.

8 Pick a conjunction and use it Turn over your conjunction cards and mix them up. The first person writes a sentence persuading me not to give you homework and then passes the work on. The next person then picks a card and uses this conjunction to add a sentence to the argument.

9 Exit ticket Complete the exit ticket to reflect on what you have learnt and I will try to answer your questions over the next few lessons.

10 You asked about… Can we use anything other than conjuntions? Yes, use the other sentence openings (prepositions, adverbs, similes) sometimes as well as more ordinary sentence starters such as verbs, nouns and pronouns etc. Do we need all 5 structure arrows in our writing? Yes, this is very important. Why are conjunctions important? To make sure the reader understands your train of thought. Otherwise, it can be just a lot of ideas jumbled together. How long is this topic? 2 weeks When are we completing our unfinished reports? Thursday or Monday Tutorials Print off of conjunction examples Done – here you go! Conjunctions to avoid – any that you are not familiar with or don’t know the meaning of and odd ones like moreover and nonetheless can sound strange when used by a teenager.

11 You also asked about… Will we be writing an editorial like the ones in the booklet? Yes – but shorter! Using conjunctions in your own writing. – we will do this today. Sentence starters – E and A of Texas E – What this means is…./ In detail,this means…/ This means…./ To clarify…. A – This could suggest…./ This could also connote…/This could mean…/ More help with punctuation – it’s a work in progress. Which bits first? I could do mini tutorials – is that a good idea? Semi colons (;) – ok, no problem, will do. Starting and grabbing attention. – Look at the examples for inspirations or use rhetorical questions, bold statistics or statements or an anecdote (short personal story)
