Turn and Talk * Share out your progressive Do Now with your pair. * Respond to your partner’s Do Now by using one of the Accountable Talk Sentence Starters (write this in your notebook when you are finished telling your partner!):  -I agree/disagree with _____ because…  -I can add to what ____ just said…  -I have a different opinion because…  -I still have questions about ___ because… ** Share out as a class. * AIM!!!

AIM: HOW DO WE WRITE A CRITICAL LENS ESSAY?

Critical Lens Instructions: Write a critical essay in which you discuss two works of literature you have read from the particular perspective of the statement that is provided for you in the Critical Lens. In your essay, provide a valid interpretation of the statement, agree or disagree with the statement as you have interpreted it, and support your opinion using specific references to appropriate literary elements from the two works. You may use scrap paper to plan your response. Write your essay beginning on page 3 of the essay booklet.

Introduction What is the introduction asking you to do? Where do you see this in the directions? Let’s write an introduction together for the quote from the do now.

Period 1 Introduction Paragraph Nido Qubein states, “Your present circumstances don’t determine where you can go; they merely determine where you start.” In other words, your current situation doesn’t predict your future; it simply predicts where you begin. I agree with this statement because, in literature as in life, characters face times where they start out in very challenging and difficult situations, and they are able to overcome them. This can be seen in Fences by August Wilson and Night by Elie Wiesel.

Period 7 Introduction Paragraph: Nido Qubein states, “Your present circumstances don’t determine where you can go; they merely determine where you start.” In other words, your current situation doesn’t decide what your future will be; it actually determines where you begin. I agree with this statement because no matter where you start, it doesn’t affect what you will do in the future. This can be seen in Fences by August Wilson and Night by Elie Wiesel.

Homework (Assignment #9) Complete the critical lens template introduction paragraph ON LOOSE LEAF PAPER for Night and Fences.
