Our Troublesome Tongues – James 3:1-12

 James 3:1-2 Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, knowing that as such we will incur a stricter judgment. For we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body as well.

 Why this strict statement concerning teaching?  Understanding the power of the teacher  Respecting the influence wielded by preachers and teachers

 Flawless like God?  Perfect meaning well- controlled.  Able to bridle the whole body.

 Vs. 3 – Now if we put bits into the horses’ mouths so that they will obey us, we direct their entire body as well.

 Vs. 5 -- So also the tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it boasts of great things.

 Vs. 5b – …see how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire!  Tiny sparks set forests aflame.

 Vs. 6-8  It is a fire  It is the world of iniquity  It defiles the entire body  Sets our lives on fire  Is set on fire by hell  Is a restless evil full of poison

 Vs. 8-12  No one can tame the tongue  We use it to bless and curse.  Illustrations of the error of this habit:  Fresh/bitter water  Salt/fresh water  Figs/olives/grapes
