Our Troublesome Tongues – James 3:1-12

James 3:1-2 Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, knowing that as such we will incur a stricter judgment. For we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body as well.

Why this strict statement concerning teaching? Understanding the power of the teacher Respecting the influence wielded by preachers and teachers

Flawless like God? Perfect meaning well- controlled. Able to bridle the whole body.

Vs. 3 – Now if we put bits into the horses’ mouths so that they will obey us, we direct their entire body as well.

Vs. 5 -- So also the tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it boasts of great things.

Vs. 5b – …see how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire! Tiny sparks set forests aflame.

Vs. 6-8 It is a fire It is the world of iniquity It defiles the entire body Sets our lives on fire Is set on fire by hell Is a restless evil full of poison

Vs. 8-12 No one can tame the tongue We use it to bless and curse. Illustrations of the error of this habit: Fresh/bitter water Salt/fresh water Figs/olives/grapes
