2. WHAT IS AN EQUATION? An equation is a mathematical statement of the form A=B, where A and B are expressions containing one variable called unknown, and the symbol ‘=‘ denotes the equality relation. A solution or root of an equation is the value of the unknown for which the equation becomes a true statement;a solution is said to satisfy the equation. Solving an equation is the process of finding its roots; the set of all the roots of an equation is said ‘the solution set’. Depending on the number of solutions, an equation can be Determined, if it has a finite number of solutions Undetermined, if it has infinitely many solutions Impossible, if it has no solutions.

3. If an equation is written in its normal form ax + b = 0, then it is said a linear equation. The term b is the ‘note term’. The procedure to solve a linear equation is the following:
