MATHS LESSON PLAN Equations and identity Teacher : Lucia Visciano ICS ‘Giampietro Romano’ – Torre del Greco

WHAT IS AN EQUATION? An equation is a mathematical statement of the form A=B, where A and B are expressions containing one variable called unknown, and the symbol ‘=‘ denotes the equality relation. A solution or root of an equation is the value of the unknown for which the equation becomes a true statement;a solution is said to satisfy the equation. Solving an equation is the process of finding its roots; the set of all the roots of an equation is said ‘the solution set’. Depending on the number of solutions, an equation can be Determined, if it has a finite number of solutions Undetermined, if it has infinitely many solutions Impossible, if it has no solutions.

If an equation is written in its normal form ax + b = 0, then it is said a linear equation. The term b is the ‘note term’. The procedure to solve a linear equation is the following:

Contents : Identity and equations Equivalent equations Linear equations Fractional linear equations First degree problems

Teaching aims : to enable learners to understand the difference between identities and equations to enable learners to solve a first degree equation to develop learners’ abilities to solve problems by using equations

Learning outcomes Know : the concepts of identity and equation and their difference Be able to : apply the procedure to solve a first degree equation Be aware : that some problems can be solved with equations of how to cooperate in a group

Assessment Can the learners apply the equivalence principles and solve a first degree equation? solve geometrical problems by using equations? Cooperate in a group?

Communication – key terms -Equation, identity -Unknown, determined, undetermined, impossible -Solution, root, set of solutions/solution set -Equivalent, equivalence principles -Normal form, linear equation, known term. Structures : if …. then, first, after, then, finally.

Cognition Knowledge of the subject content Reasoning Skills : identifying equivalent equations into a group of different equations making predictions on their solutions reasoning, problem solving, interpreting, giving reasons, testing conclusions.

Resources books, photocopies interactive whiteboard worksheets differentiated worksheets for less able students

Procedure Whole class : activate prior knowledge of the content by asking low and high order questions Individually : the students solve various exercises on worksheets Whole class - Final plenary to evaluate learners’ competences, abilities and cognitions.

Final Plenary : the final task is a multiple choice test.
