Idea 3 = Teach someone else Make a recording, poster, mind map, PowerPoint and teach it to someone else (a fellow higher pupil, a friend, a family member “What we teach, We never forget” “What we teach, We never forget”

Summary 1.Know the course content 2.Access the information for each area 3.Make a one page product for each topic 4 British essays, 4 USA, 4 Scottish Issues = 12 sheets

Section 2: The Essays Key points Key points 40/ 60 marks in paper or 2/3 of grade You must do two essays, one British, one USA You should do these first, before the Scottish section You must prepare for four essays in each section to be guaranteed a question Do your strongest essay first Spend no more than 45m on each

The three BIG MISTAKES BIG MISTAKE ONE Reading the question incorrectly and therefore writing the wrong essay BIG MISTAKE TWO Writing a narrative (big long story of facts) BIG MISTAKE THREE Doing only one essay (or one brilliant one and one shocker)

BIG MISTAKE ONE BIG MISTAKE ONE Reading the question incorrectly and therefore writing the wrong essay 1.How successful were the Liberal Reforms of 1906- 14 in meeting the needs of the British people? 2.“The Labour Reforms of 1945-51 failed to deal with the problems of postwar Britain.” discuss. 3.To what extent was the Liberal government’s decision to introduce reforms between 1906-14 due to concern over national efficiency? 4.How democratic was Britain by 1918? 5.To what extent was the growth of democracy after 1851 due to the effects of industrialisation & urbanisation?

BIG MISTAKE ONE BIG MISTAKE ONE Reading the question incorrectly and therefore writing the wrong essay 1.How successful were the Liberal Reforms of 1906-14 in meeting the needs of the British people? Issue 5 – Liberal assessment 2.“The Labour Reforms of 1945-51 failed to deal with the problems of postwar Britain.” discuss. Issue 6 – Labour assessment 3.How democratic was Britain by 1918? Issue 2 – Democracy assessment 4.To what extent was the Liberal government’s decision to introduce reforms between 1906-14 due to concern over national efficiency? Issue 4 – Liberal Motives 5.To what extent was the growth of democracy after 1851 due to the effects of industrialisation & urbanisation? Issue 1 – Democracy motives

Free at Last? 1.To what extent the influence of WW2 the most important reasons for the development of a Civil Rights movement after 1945? 2.To what extent did the Civil Rights Movement meet the needs of black Americans, up to 1968? 3.To what extent was the ‘separate but equal’ decision of the Supreme Court the main obstacle facing black Americans in achieving civil rights before 1941?

1.To what extent the influence of WW2 the most important reasons for the development of a Civil Rights movement after 1945? USA Issue 4 – growth of CRM after 1945 2.To what extent did the Civil Rights Movement meet the needs of black Americans, up to 1968? USA Issue 6 – Success of CRM 3.To what extent was the ‘separate but equal’ decision of the Supreme Court the main obstacle facing black Americans in achieving civil rights before 1941? USA Issue 2 – obstacles to achievement of civil rights

BIG MISTAKE TWO BIG MISTAKE TWO Writing a narrative (big long story of facts) 3 part intro – 2 marks Knowledge (facts) - 6 marks Analysis (explaining/ answering the question) - 6 marks Evaluation – 4 marks 3 step conclusion - 2 marks

A few calculations to consider… ‘Essays’ which just recount facts – max 6 marks (x2) = 12 marks, 12/60 = 20% = No Award Key message = you will not pass based on knowledge alone Essays which have a 3 part intro, conclusion, 6 facts = 10 marks (x2) = 20 marks (plus say 10/20 in Scottish Section) = 30/60, 50% = C Key message = by simply structuring your essays well and knowing facts you can pass Higher History 3 part intro + 6 facts + 4 basic analysis + 3 part conclusion = 14/20 = A Key message = by writing a well structured essay with basic analysis you can achieve an A in Higher history.

BIG MISTAKE THREE BIG MISTAKE THREE Doing only one essay (or one brilliant one and one shocker) This is just a terrible idea. Don’t do it. No good candidates ever do this.

Section 3 – The Scottish/Source Section Four Issues Three Question Types (Evaluate the Usefulness, Comparison, How Fully) So only 3 issues will be examined but you cannot prepare for this Worth 20 marks or 1/3 of paper Do this last – in last 45 mins

Two things you need to know content The content of each issue i.e. the facts Use your mind maps to do this Roughly 3 facts per mandatory content area is plenty The question structures The question structures You need to just learn these and apply them on the day Practice using past paper questions www.sqa.org.uk/past papers www.sqa.org.uk/past papers

Why do people lose marks? Don’t learn the structures & lose marks (i.e. no judgement in a how fully loses you 7 marks) Don’t leave enough time for this section (equality!) Don’t learn their stuff & therefore have no own knowledge to contribute (no excuses here)

How Fully – 9 marks The Source gives a fairly good description of ________ x 1 The source says “…” This means that …. X3 The source fails to mention … x6

Evaluate the usefulness– 6 marks Origin & Purpose (4) Who, when, what, why This makes it more/ less useful because… Source Content (2) The source says “…” This is useful as it shows… Content Omission (2) The source fails to mention ….. This makes it less useful

Comparison – 4 marks Overall, Sources A and B agree on x, y, z and *. (x1) In detail, Source A and B agree that …. Source A says “…” and B says “” (x 4)
