16.01 Classifying Polygons

A polygon is a closed figure with three or more sides. Examples of Polygons Examples of Non – Polygons

Polygons can be named or classified by its number of sides. 3 - SidesTriangle 4 - SidesQuadrilateral 5 - SidesPentagon 6 - Sides 7 - Sides 8 - Sides 10 - Sides 12 - Sides Hexagon Heptagon Octagon Decagon Dodecagon

There are convex and concave polygons. To determine if a polygon is convex or concave, use the rubber band test. The rubber band test says a polygon is convex if a rubber band is stretch around a figure and the rubber band has the shape as the figure. If it is not the same shape, then the figure is concave.

Determine if the polygon is convex or concave. convex concave convex

Some polygons are equilateral. All the sides are equal. Some polygons are equiangular. All the angles are equal. If a polygon is both equilateral and equiangular, then it is called a regular polygon. Example:A Square Since a square is both equilateral and equiangular, then it’s a regular quadrilateral.
