William Shakespeare William Shakespeare (1564-1616) was born in Stratford, England, of middle-class parents. He early worked in all three Elizabethan dramatic genres-tragedy, comedy, and history.

William Shakespeare Records of Shakespeare's plays begin to appear in 1594, and he produced roughly two a year until around 1611. Some of his most famous tragedies were written in the early 1600s including 'Hamlet', 'Othello', 'King Lear' and 'Macbeth'.
