Centrum voor Landbouwkundig Onderzoek in Suriname Centre for Agricultural Research in Suriname Motivation – cassava genebank project CELOS decided to set up a genebank (in 2006): – – general objective: Supporting the development of the cassava processing sector in Suriname by setting up and managing a cassava field genebank (102 accessions) – – specific objective: To collect and describe cassava varieties used in Suriname and make data and varieties available to the sector 3
4
Centrum voor Landbouwkundig Onderzoek in Suriname Centre for Agricultural Research in Suriname Motivation – insights in the value chain InputsProductionProcessingRetail 4 Fertilizers: -Artificial -Chicken manure Permanent farming systems: 1.Maximum three varieties Fresh roots Other processed products Local fresh markets + exports to e.g. the Netherlands 1. Traditional processing equipment 2. Motorized processing equipment Traditional slash and burn farming systems 1. Usually several varieties Traditional products: 1.Traditional cassava bread 2.Kwak (farinha) 3.Gomma (Traditional starch extraction) Local markets Cassava in animal feeds (mainly broilers) Cassava in bread, flour
5
Centrum voor Landbouwkundig Onderzoek in Suriname Centre for Agricultural Research in Suriname Motivation – opportunities/technical data Maize and soybean used mainly in poultry feeding; both imported No data to decide which cassava varieties to use for the purpose of broiler feeding. Needs: – –the highest yielding varieties – –master processing techniques – –varieties with the appropriate quality – –formulate appropriate farming systems 5
6
Centrum voor Landbouwkundig Onderzoek in Suriname Centre for Agricultural Research in Suriname Research objectives General objective – –Identification of cassava varieties suitable for the production of cassava leaf meal and cassava root meal for poultry feeding Specific objectives – –Identify varieties with high leaf protein content, low cyanide content, high fresh leaf yield, consistent fresh leaf yield, low fiber content, low ash content – –Identification of varieties that produce during at least of year – –Same analysis where done for varieties for root production 6
7
Centrum voor Landbouwkundig Onderzoek in Suriname Centre for Agricultural Research in Suriname Materials and methods – leaf production 7 1.Five accessions were evaluated in a split plot design (main plot treatment) 2.Three replicates (blocks) 3.75 plants per subplot in a 5 rows with 15 plants arrangement 4.Sub plot treatment was growth period of 2 and 3 months after planting 5.Two fertilizer application Evaluating for leaf production
8
Centrum voor Landbouwkundig Onderzoek in Suriname Centre for Agricultural Research in Suriname Materials and methods – leaf harvest 8 1.At harvest plants were cut of at 30 to 40cm above ground 2.Leaves collected and weighed for measuring fresh leaf yield
9
Centrum voor Landbouwkundig Onderzoek in Suriname Centre for Agricultural Research in Suriname Material and method – leaf processing 9 Shredded on a concrete floor Turning regularly to facilitate drying Cyanide content decreases
10
Centrum voor Landbouwkundig Onderzoek in Suriname Centre for Agricultural Research in Suriname Material and method – CLM production 10 Dried leafs are worked with a hammer mill to produce cassava leaf meal Cassava leaf meal is then sampled for analysis
11
Centrum voor Landbouwkundig Onderzoek in Suriname Centre for Agricultural Research in Suriname Materials and methods – roots production 11 1.Two varieties evaluated 2.Completely randomized design 3.Three replicates (blocks) 4.Harvest was at 12 months after planting Evaluating for root production Acc 25Acc 40 Acc 25 block 1block 2block 3

Centrum voor Landbouwkundig Onderzoek in Suriname Centre for Agricultural Research in Suriname Materials and methods 12 Cassava roots are passed through a chipper Roots are dried on a concrete floor
13
Centrum voor Landbouwkundig Onderzoek in Suriname Centre for Agricultural Research in Suriname Materials and methods – CRM production 13 Dried cassava chips are hammer milled to produce cassava root meal Flour is sampled for analysis

Centrum voor Landbouwkundig Onderzoek in Suriname Centre for Agricultural Research in Suriname Future work Identification of more suitable varieties; Setting up of appropriate and sustainable farming systems (identify year round production fluctuations); Further characterization of reference varieties; Economic analysis for a viable operation 16
17
Centrum voor Landbouwkundig Onderzoek in Suriname Centre for Agricultural Research in Suriname Future work A new product? One product this work will generate is cassava feed component based on root and leaf meal Beneficiaries: this technology should open up new market opportunities for local cassava producers and (small and large scale) processors Knowledge transfer: model farms and clear economics Timeline to delivery; Potential gains; new opportunities for local producers 17
