Topic: Fossil Fuels PSSA: 3.5.7.A / S8.D.1.1

Objective: TLW compare the three types of fossil fuels. TLW identify problems associated with the use of fossil fuels.

MI #1: Coal (Part 1) Coal is a solid fossil fuel commonly used in electrical power plants. Coal forms from decayed swamp plants.

MI #2: Coal (Part 2) The 4 stages of coal formation are peat, lignite, bituminous coal, and anthracite. Problems with the use of coal include air pollution, acid rain, and mine drainage issues.

MI #3: Petroleum (Part 1) Petroleum is a liquid fossil fuel that is used to power automobiles. Petroleum forms from the remains of microscopic sea creatures.

MI #4: Petroleum (Part 2) Environmental problems associated with petroleum use include acid precipitation and smog. Petroleum also creates economic concerns due to its rising price and high demand.

MI #5: Natural Gas (Part 1) Natural gas is a gaseous fossil fuel commonly used for heating. Natural gas forms from the decayed remains of ancient microscopic sea creatures.

MI #6: Natural Gas (Part 2) Problems associated with burning natural gas include acid rain and rising prices.

So What…? Real Life Application Fossil fuels are one of the world’s primary energy resources, used in industry, heating, and transportation. They are also nonrenewable, so alternative energy sources must be developed.
