REMINDER!!! Properties Quiz on Thursday!
2
Section 1.2: Evaluate and Simplify Algebraic Expressions
3
Numerical expressions – consists of numbers, operations, and grouping symbols. Power – an expression formed by repeated multiplication of the same factor. Variable – a letter that is used to represent one or more numbers. Algebraic expression – an expression involving variables.
4
Order of Operations Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally P Parentheses, brackets, braces, fraction bar E Exponents and radicals M and D Multiply and divide from left to right. A and S Add and subtract from left to right.
5
Terms – in an expression that can be written as a sum, the parts added together are called the terms. Variable term – a term that has a variable part is called a variable term. Constant term – a term that has no variable part. Coefficient – when a term is a product of a number and a power of a variable, the number is called the coefficient of the power. Identity – a statement such as 8x + 3x = 11x that equates two equivalent expressions.
6
Example 1: Evaluate. a)(-12) 2 = 144 b)-12 2 = -144
7
Example 2: Evaluate 3m 2 + 5m – 12 when m = -4. 3(-4) 2 + 5(-4) – 12 3(16) + -20 – 12 48 – 20 – 12 = 16

Example 3: You are selling fresh-squeezed lemonade at a county fair for $2.50 per glass. You spend $180 to rent the stand and buy the ingredients and supplies you need. Write an expression that shows your profit from selling g glasses of lemonade. Find your profit if you sell 268 glasses of lemonade. 2.5g – 180 2.5(268) – 180 $490
9
Example 4: Simplify the expressions. a)12n – 7n = 5n b)8r 3 + 6r 2 – 9r 3 = -r 3 + 6r 2 c)9(t – 4) – 6(t + 7) 9t – 36 – 6t – 42 = 3t – 78 d)15a – 8b – 20a + 14b = -5a + 6b
