The Issue Sometimes tests, treatments and procedures do not add value Can expose the consumer to undue risk of harm and unnecessary costs Can lead to more frequent and invasive investigations Many tests have become ingrained in the system, a diversion from high quality care

The Issue Just under half of consumers (45%) reported having had a medical test in the last three months: among consumers aged 75 and above this proportion was higher: 67% of consumers aged 75 and above had a medical test in the last 3 months Of those who had had a medical test in the last three months: most had the test because their doctor (GP) or specialist had recommended it While most consumers (71%) agree with the concept of ‘reducing unnecessary tests’, this was not compatible with their attitudes towards medical tests for themselves: 74% agreed that ‘If I am sick, my doctor should conduct all available medical tests that relate to my condition The NPS MedicineWise 2015 consumer survey found:
