Vocabulary Constant A number with nothing else attached to it. Examples: 1, 2, 47, 925

Vocabulary Variable A letter that represents an unknown number. Examples: a, b, x, y

Vocabulary Coefficient The number in front of the variable. Examples: 3x 3 is the coefficient 2x 2 is the coefficient 2x 2 is the coefficient

3x 2 + 2y + 7xy + 5 In an algebraic expression, terms are the elements separated by the plus or minus signs. This example has four terms, 3x 2, 2y,7xy, and 5. Terms may consist of variables and coefficients, or constants

Examples Like Terms 5x, -14x -6.7xy, 02xy The variable factors are identical. Unlike Terms 5x, 8y The variable factors are not identical.

Like Terms y, 3y, -2y Not Like Terms x, -2g, 3k

Like Terms y 2, -2y 2, 45y 2 Not Like Terms y, -20y 2, 5y 3
