ECE 396 – Senior Design I Fall 2013 Semester Lecture 2 Getting Started

Course information Make sure you have the textbook Attendance will be taken Regularly check email and webpage –Send emails from @uic.edu domain

Getting Started Form design team –Three members (min=2, max=4) Determine project topic –Brainstorm project ideas Find faculty advisor –Faculty research interests ( www.ece.uic.edu ) www.ece.uic.edu Laboratory notebook

Getting Started – cont. Don’t have a design team? –Email me your interests Looking for member(s) for your team? –Email me your project topic Do this as soon as possible!

Course website http://www.uic.edu/~vahe/fall2013/ece396/ Course information, calendar Forms, assignments, presentations ECE News, parts, other topics

Engineering Use of mathematics and natural sciences to solve practical problems for the benefit of mankind Practical problems have constraints –Economic, safety, environmental, etc. –Maintenance, manufacturability Engineering vs. technologist –Engineering emphasizes problem-solving

What does an engineer do? Eat donuts and drink coffee Customer (needs solution to problem) Engineer (the problem solver) Manufacturer (implements solution)

Role of an Engineer Provide a solution to a practical problem with real-world constraints Usually works in multiple disciplines –Electrical, mechanical, industrial –Economics, high-volume manufacturing –Must consider component variations

Example problem Power supply –Provide 5V +/- 2% to microcontroller from a 12V system (automotive) 12V system voltage has wide variation –Cold-start (6V), max charging (18V) How do we do this? –Voltage divider??
