What are some of the forms of you energy used today? Explain how you used them.
3
I used several forms of energy today. First I used mechanical energy when I got out of bed and started moving around this morning. Then I used electrical energy to flat iron my hair. Thermal energy was used when I cooked my breakfast. The last form of energy that I used was chemical energy which was used to power my car on the way to work.
4
All energy can be classified as nonrenewable or renewable
5
Nonrenewable resources- are used up much faster than it can be replaced
6
Fossil fuels- energy from the decayed remains of ancient plants and animals Produce large amounts of energy
7
Coal- solid fossil fuel (formed from ancient plants) burned in many power plants Petroleum/crude oil- liquid fossil fuel (formed from ancient sea creatures) Natural gas- a fossil fuel found along with Petroleum
8
Renewable energy resources- can be replaced as it is used or cannot be used up
9
Solar energy – energy from the sun Solar panels can be used to heat water for homes Other solar panels produce electricity Photovoltaic cells (solar cells)- produces electricity by causing electrons to move when light hits atoms in the cell
11
Photovoltaic cells- require sunlight and cannot produce electricity at night Solar batteries store energy produced by solar cells
12
Solar reflectors- reflects and focuses sunlight onto a fluid filled pipe that uses thermal energy to turn water into steam
13
Wind energy-energy of moving air Hydro power- energy of moving water Biomass- any material from living things that can be used as an energy source Burning wood, ethanol (crops/corn) Geothermal- heat energy from inside the earth Hot springs, geyser, volcanically active ground
