Services Service-any activity that fulfills a human want or need and returns money to those who provide it (Rubinstein) Services are usually located where they can be close to market Services are usually located in settlements, that is, clusters of human habitation

Types of Services Consumer Services serve individuals A. retail services provide products B. personal services provide for the “well- being and personal improvement of individuals”; they include education, social services, recreation, hotels, religions, self- improvement, communication, etc; this group includes one-fifth of all American jobs (Bloch)

Service Types Business Services support other businesses; they include: Producer services- banks, insurance, real estate, law, engineering, accounting, management Transportation and Information Services (Cerner) (Sprint) Public Service

Central Place Theory A central place is a market center for the exchange of goods and services by people attracted from the surrounding area The central place services a hinterland which is defined by: Range-the maximum distance people will travel; and Threshold-the minimum number of people needed to support a service
