Land Owners Urged to take Responsibility for Protecting their Properties from Landslides Hazard: Landslide http://stlucia.gov.lc/pr2005/november/land_owners_urged_to_take_responsibility_for_protecting_their_properties_from_landslides.htm November 25, 2005 - The Ministry of Communications, Works, Transport and Public Utilities has highlighted the need for land owners to take responsibility for protecting their own properties from the onslaught of land slippages. The Ministry's Permanent Secretary Jerome Jules says his department has to grapple with public expectation that it should be held responsible for land slippages occurring on their private properties. Mr. Jules says whereas the Ministry does have some personal responsibility for the clearing of access to pedestrians and vehicular traffic, its main responsibility is to Public infrastructure.

LANDSLIDE TYPES Hazard Defined

THE KEY IS: 1) KNOW THE DISASTER HISTORY OF YOUR REGION 2) KNOW YOUR COMMUNITY Preparing for Landslide

Ravine Poison [Rapid] Landslide [1938] Black Mallet / Maynard Hill [Slow] Landslide [1999] Preparing for Landslide Knowledge of where past Landslides have occurred derived from local records and knowledge of certain types of rocks prone to landslides.

Capture and drainage of water before it reaches potential slope area Underground drainage by using sub-surface pipes Land Reform by terracing/re-shaping Preparing for Landslide

Management of Slope Stability in Communities [MoSSaiC] Preparing for Landslide

Discuss the hazard with your family. Prepare a disaster plan. Know the safe zones. Prepare an evacuation plan. Don’t forget your pets! Preparing for Landslide

Groceries Hardware Papers: Passport, ID, Insurance, Mortgage, Wills Medicines and First Aid Supplies Baby Supplies Animal Supplies Preparing for Landslide

Building code November 30,1999 - The Ministry of Planning says a National Building Code for St. Lucia - three years in the making is about to come to fruition. The development of the code has been further prompted by an increase is the destructive nature of natural disasters in recent times, which has been further exacerbated by spontaneous developments in several disaster prone areas of the country. Preparing for Landslide As of April 2010 the Building Code has not been adopted

“It is generally accepted that disaster mitigation pays. For example, the World Bank and United States Geological Survey once calculated that economic losses worldwide from natural disasters during the 1990s could be reduced by $280 billion if $30 billion were invested in disaster mitigation and preparedness — a ratio of $7 saved for every $1 spent.” Twigg 2001, p. 3. Preparing for Landslide What will you spend your $1.00 on?

Preparing for Landslide I want to urge you to act now in getting the insured household percentage up from 35%. I want to challenge you to strive at a 60% figure for this year, no matter how painful the financial cost Dr. Kenny D. Anthony Prime Minister of Saint Lucia January 16, 2005

Preparing for Landslide Insurance premiums that correctly reflect the risk of Landslide, by being based on long-term annual average damages, should provide an indication of the risk of developing in the Landslide area and would deter unsuitable developments there. Insurance of subsistence is different to a landslide policy.

The four components of an early warning system: 1.Monitor the hazard; 2.Quantify the hazard; 3.A disaster plan to address the hazard; [Landslide Response Plan, Community Evacuation Plan] 4.Effective communications for warning. Early Warning Systems

Anything on top of or in the path of a Landslide will suffer damage Rubble may block roads, lines of communication or waterways. Indirect effect may include loss of productivity of agricultural or forest lands. Flooding. Reduced property values, destruction of buildings. Casualties- fatalities may occur due to slope failure.
