5 The Different Sides of WWII: Axis Powers : Germany (Hitler) Italy (Mussolini) Japan (military leaders) Allies Great Britain France United States

6 Causes of WWII: The countries in the Axis Powers wanted more land, power, and resources… The Allies wanted to stop the war or invasions.

7 The Last Straw: In 1939, Germany took Poland, Britain had no other choice now then to declare war. Germany then invaded Denmark, Norway, Belgium, Netherlands, over half of France, Romania, Bulgaria Slovakia, Yugoslavia and Greece. (Mostly Eastern Europe) Around the same time, Japan is taking over Manchuria (parts of China) and French-Indo China (Southeast Asia)

8 What about the United States? U.S. was officially neutral but helping out the Allies (Britain) when they could. U.S. did not get involved until the attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii in 1941.

11 Why did Japan attack U.S.? The U.S. was throwing their support behind Britain who was being heavily attacked by the Axis Powers. Japan had A LOT of money stored in U.S. banks and the U.S. choose to cut off Japan’s access to their money and trade. This stopped them from having the resources and supplies they needed for the war. Japan attacked the U.S. Two days later U.S. declared war with Japan And Germany and Italy declared war with the U.S.

12 D-Day-June 6, 1944 The Battle of Normandy- The U.S. (western allies) began the battle to liberate or free mainland Europe from Nazi take over.

13 In August 1945, the U.S. dropped two atomic bombs on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

14 Atomic Blasts end war Days after the atomic bombs were dropped on Japan the war ended. First and only time nuclear weapons were used on PEOPLE. WWII re-arranged the map of Europe. Germany became 2 nations (East/West) The two powers that came out of WWII still strong were the U.S. and Soviet Union.

15 Standard: Explain the role of the U.S. in the re-building of Japan after WWII. Brief overview of WWII, in order to understand what happened at the end. Major points of interest for CRCT: *Japan’s side, Why was Japan upset with U.S.?, Why did U.S. bomb Japan?, Why did U.S. help re-build Japan?
