3 Two further data gathering and impact assessment projects l Build on the present data gathering contract, same team l Problem assessment, option definition, information gap analysis, data gathering, impact assessment l Work just launched – detailed presentation at next Advisory Group l Final reports around July 2007

4 Data gathering part 2 - topics l Possible changes to current Annex 1 definitions u Sections 2.4 (ferrous metal), 3.5 (ceramics), 4 (biological processing), 6.4(b) (food and drink) l Possible additions to Annex 1 u Gasification/liquefaction, primary wood products, wood preservation, coal fuel products, independent industrial WWTPs, shipyards l Other u Soil protection provisions (follow-up to soil strategy) plus up to two other

5 Data gathering – waste topics l Possible revision of current waste activity definitions l Possible addition of new waste activities Significant env. impact:Unknown impact: Biological treatment of organic waste Pre-treatment of combustible waste for co- incineration Sorting of Construction/Demolition waste Off-site treatment of slags and ashes for recycling Recycling of sludges Mechanical recycling of plastics Chemical recycling of plastics Recycling of wood Recycling of rubber Recycling of minerals Scrap metal preparation Recycling of edible oils/fat Recycling of gypsum

6 Assessment of use of general binding rules l Main Objective: gain better understanding of where and how GBRs are used u Description per MS, per sector, per medium u Why used or not used l For selected GBRs, further study of u Legal status, conditions covered, industry and geographic coverage, method of development including consideration of BREFs, method of application including possible deviation, costs l Contract to start before the end of this year – draft final report around November 2007

7 Assessment of MS implementation reports l Contract to analyse MS’ 2 nd implementation reports (due end Sept; 14 received to date) - main objectives: u Look at and compare responses and provide summary information on issues such as implementation approach, no. of permits, etc u Develop database on implementation, to be made publicly available u Analyse information on ELVs as input to cement/lime and iron/steel BREF reviews l Contract to start before the end of this year – final report around December 2007
