Warm-up! (Copy the question and answer it.) There are 3 types of potential energy: Gravitational, elastic, and chemical potential. A.Which type of potential energy is due to an object’s position? B. Which is due to the compression of an elastic object? C. Which is due to the potential energy stored within the chemical bonds of an object? Gravitational potential Elastic potential Chemical potential

“the ability to do work” The combination of energy and matter make up the universe: –Matter is substance, and energy is the mover of substance. What is energy?

How is all energy divided? Potential Energy Kinetic Energy All Energy Gravitation Potential Energy Elastic Potential Energy Chemical Potential Energy

Potential Kinetic energy of position or energy in storage. - Water behind a dam - Hammer being held above a nail - The point before the pitcher releases the baseball. energy of motion, the form capable of doing work –Flowing water –A falling hammer –The baseball racing towards the pitcher.

What is Gravitational Potential Energy? oPotential energy due to an object’s position oP.E. = mass x height x gravity Don’t look down, Rover! Good boy!

Gravitational Potential

What is Elastic Potential Energy? oPotential energy due compression or expansion of an elastic object. Notice the ball compressing and expanding

What is Chemical Potential Energy? oPotential energy stored within the chemical bonds of an object

What is Kinetic Energy? oEnergy an object has due to its motion oK.E. =.5(mass x speed 2 )

Energy Transformation Problem: How can we demonstrate energy transformation? Hypothesis: Mix vinegar and baking soda in an Erlenmeyer flask and put a cork in the flask. Test: Conduct the experiment by mixing vinegar and baking soda in an Erlenmeyer flask and put a cork in the flask. Analyze Data: The cork popped off the flask. Draw Conclusions: The hypothesis was correct. Chemical energy  sound + mechanical energy Share Results

Energy Transformation 2 Problem: How can we demonstrate energy transformation? Hypothesis: Mix vinegar and baking soda in a test tube and put a balloon on top of the test tube.. Test: Conduct the experiment by mixing vinegar and baking soda in an test tube and put a balloon on top of the test tube. Analyze Data: The balloon expanded. Draw Conclusions: The hypothesis was correct. Chemical energy  mechanical energy Share Results

How to Make a Spool Racer 1.Put a rubber band through the center of the spool. 2.Put a toothpick through a loop at the left side of the spool and pull the rubber band tight. 3.Tape the toothpick to the spool. 4.Put a washer through the rubber band on the right side of the spool. 5.Put a pencil through the loop on the right and turn the pencil to wind up the spool racer. 6.Race your spool racer!

When you are finished testing your spool racer: Please disassemble your spool racer and return the kit to the basket. Complete the flashcard worksheet and put it in the inbox. Please do not cut them apart today. Read Chapter 14, Lesson 2
