2 Cuban Revolution (1895)  Spanish owned Cuba had become an interest of the U.S.  Cubans rebels revolted against Spain.  Spain began rounding up rebels into concentration camps

3 Yellow journalism  Exaggerated reporting by newspapers to attract readers  This was the 1 st reason for the start of the Spanish-American War

4 William Randolph Hearst  Owned New York Journal.  Published that the Spanish were feeding Cuban prisoners to sharks and dogs (example of yellow journalism) *Hearst wanted a war

5 Joseph Pulitzer  Owner of the newspaper, New York World, published that Cuba was a place covered in blood

6 Delome Letter (Feb. 1898)  Letter written by a Spanish minister, criticized President McKinley’s handling of the Cuban Revolution  Led Americans to be angry at the Spanish *2 nd reason for the start of the war

7 U.S.S. Maine (Feb. 1898)  American battleship in Cuban Harbor  It explodes  The press blame the Spanish *3 rd reason for the war  Jingoism- aggressive nationalism, many Americans were calling for war

8 Spanish American War (April 1898)  Admiral George Dewey- leads the American Navy in the first battle at Manila Bay  U.S. defeats the Spanish Navy in Philippines (also controlled by Spain)

9 Rough Riders  Volunteer cavalry unit led by Theodore Roosevelt called “Rough Riders”  captures San Juan Hill  Leads to America controlling Puerto Rico (formally controlled by Spain)

10 Treaty of Paris (1898)  This treaty ended the war with Spain  U.S. gained possession of the Philippines, Guam, and Puerto Rico  Cuba became its own independent nation

11 Platt Amendment  Amendment stated that Cuban constitution allowed U.S. the right to intervene in Cuban affairs to protect American interests  U.S. established a naval base at Guantanamo Bay

12 Assignment  Create a newspaper with a partner on paper or on Microsoft Publisher.  Using Yellow Journalism create two articles on events taking place in Cuba leading to the Spanish American War  Must have two images with both Articles
