CHANGES IN AN ECOSYSTEM CAUSED BY ANIMALS - INCLUDING HUMANS
40
This presentation will ask you to THINK – DISCUSS – WRITE But first, here is some background information……
41
EVERYTHING CHANGES… Things done by animals cause changes within an ecosystem These changes can be BENEFICIAL, DETRIMENTAL, or NEUTRAL to other parts of the ecosystem Discuss at your table what you think these three words might mean
42
BENEFICIAL CHANGES These changes mean GOOD THINGS for some part of the ecosystem A change in an ecosystem is BENEFICIAL for some parts of the ecosystem
43
DETRIMENTAL CHANGES These changes mean BAD THINGS for some part of the ecosystem Some changes are DETRIMENTAL for some parts of the ecosystem
44
NEUTRAL CHANGES These changes mean NEITHER good things nor bad things for some part of the ecosystem Some changes are NEUTRAL for some parts of the ecosystem – these changes have NO EFFCT on certain parts of an ecosystem
45
Let’s look at some examples… Can you name this animal?
46
This animal is a BEAVER DISCUSS AT YOUR TABLE – What are some things you know about the beaver?
47
BEAVERS BUILD DAMS Beavers live in rivers or streams. They build dams which stop the flow of the water.
48
THINK & DISCUSS How did the beaver building a dam change the ecosystem? How are these changes BENEFICIAL? DETRIMENTAL? NEUTRAL? After discussion, we will complete our note sheet together.
49
Here’s another example…. Can you name this animal?
50
This animal is an EARTHWORM DISCUSS AT YOUR TABLE – What are some things you know about the earthworm?
51
EARTHWORMS BURROW IN THE GROUND Earthworms spend most of the time underground, digging tunnels, or burrows.
52
THINK & DISCUSS How does an earthworm burrowing change the ecosystem? How are these changes BENEFICIAL? DETRIMENTAL? NEUTRAL? After discussion, we will complete our note sheet together.
53
HOW CAN HUMAN CHANGES EFFECT AN ECOSYSTEM?
54
Introducing a new species DID YOU KNOW? All of these animals were brought to North American from other continents CAN YOU GUESS THE CONTINENT FOR EACH ANIMAL? DISCUSS AT YOUR TABLE. CATSHEEP GUINEA PIG HORSE
55
Introducing a new species CAT AFRICA EUROPE SHEEP ASIA GUINEA PIG SOUTH AMERICA HORSE EUROPE
56
THINK & DISCUSS How does introducing a new species of animal change the ecosystem? How are these changes BENEFICIAL? DETRIMENTAL? NEUTRAL? After discussion, we will complete our note sheet together.
57
HUMANS HAVE ALSO INTRODUCED NEW SPECIES OF PLANTS Asian Blight Fungus
58
THINK & DISCUSS How does introducing a new species of plant effect the ecosystem? How are these changes BENEFICIAL? DETRIMENTAL? NEUTRAL? After discussion, we will complete our note sheet together.
59
THERE WAS ONE HUGE DETRIMENTAL EFFECT….. The Asian Blight Fungus fed on the American Chestnut Tree – wiped out 180 million acres of this tree and the result was 10 species of moths went extinct.
60
Another human effect…CONSTRUCTION The BUTLER COUNTY REGIONAL HIGHWAY was completed December 13, 1999
61
THINK & DISCUSS How does building a new highway effect the ecosystem? How are these changes BENEFICIAL? DETRIMENTAL? NEUTRAL? After discussion, we will complete our note sheet together.
62
MORE CONSTRUCTION… In 2006, a new UDF store was opened at the corner of 747 and Princeton Road.
63
THINK & DISCUSS How does building a UDF store effect the ecosystem? How are these changes BENEFICIAL? DETRIMENTAL? NEUTRAL? After discussion, we will complete our note sheet together.
