Description These days, kids are crazy about social media. So what better way to make them excited about learning than to present content and help them make connections with students in the same way. In a way, Edmodo is like and educational version of Facebook. Edmodo is an online social networking site for learning. The site provides a safe and controlled environment in which teachers and students can collaborate, share content and ideas, access and submit homework, take quizzes, and view announcements. Edmodo also allows teachers to connect with other teachers, and parents can also access the site.

How it works… The teacher creates a profile and then creates a group for her class. The teacher then provides students with an access code so that they may access the group site. Students can then access information posted by the teacher such as notes, alerts, polls, assignments, and quizzes. Students and participate in discussions and share their ideas with others. Teachers can also use the site to connect with other teachers.
5
Safe and Controlled Environment How is Edmodo a safe and controlled environment? The site is managed and controlled directly by the teacher. Students must have an access code given to them by the teacher in order to log in. The teacher can reset the access code if needed. There are no anonymous posts. There is no private messaging between students. Parents have access to the site. Teacher can delete any posts/content.

Needed Equipment In order to access Edmodo the student must have access to : A computer, tablet, or smartphone An internet connection Since Edmodo would generally be accessed by students outside of the classroom, teachers need to be mindful of the extent to which students have internet access at home and use this to determine the extent that the tool should be utilized for the class.
13
Target Age/Grade/Subject I feel that this tool could be used by any age group with the appropriate assistance. For example, for younger users, parental involvement would be a must since this tool would be used mostly out of class. I think that students in middle school, junior high, and high school would most enjoy the site. Students of that age are more likely to already be involved in the social media frenzy and would enjoy implementing learning into something they are already familiar with and like. Students of this age are also more likely to have access to smartphones. Edmodo could be utilized for any subject/content area in order to help students gain access to information, assignments/quizzes, connect with other students, and share ideas.

Benefits Edmodo allows student to connect with one another with a focus on learning. Teachers could post summaries of lessons so that if a student is absent or out of class they could refer to the summary. It is a great place for students to access digital resources to further learning. Teachers could post homework and quizzes on the site to be completed at home, freeing up more class time. Teachers could post polls to get student opinion and inspire discussion amongst students.
