2 STATISTICS OVERVIEW Over the next four weeks you will be completing a statistical investigation To complete this task you will need to… 1. Create a question that your statistical investigation will be about (this needs to be check by the teacher before progressing further) Your question needs to be a two part questions that haves a so what? 2. Estimate what you will find out 3. Conduct statistical investigation and record data to your highest standard 4. Use graphs to show statistical investigation findings 5. Answer question and make recommendations

3 SUCCESS CRITERIA To be successful over this unit you will need to…  Gather a range of different data types  Sort and display data in multiple ways  Identify relationships and trends in data  Interpret the results within the context  Draw conclusions and make recommendations based on data

4 WHAT IS A STATISTICAL INVESTIGATION The word statistics derives from classical Latin roots, status which means state What is a statistical investigation ? The gathering of data and analysing information to help people make decisions when faced with uncertainty

5 WORKSHOPS Week 2  Mean, median, mode and range  Tally charts  Basic of using Microsoft Excel Week 3  Pie graphs in Microsoft Excel  Different graphs in Microsoft Excel

6 CONTINUOUS AND DISCRETE DATA Discrete data  Data that can only take certain values  Uses whole numbers  E.g. the number of students in a class (you can't have half a student) Continuous data  Data that can take any value (within a range)  Uses fractions and decimals  E.g. heights. People's heights could be any value. These include decimals

7 CONTINUOUS AND DISCRETE DATA Question: Classify each set of data as discrete or continuous. 1. The number of suitcases lost by an airline annually 2. The height of trees at the park 3. The number of green M&M's in a bag 4. The time it takes for a car battery to die 5. How long it takes children to run 100 metres
