Unit 11: Waves Friday, 4/15 Upcoming dates: Tuesday, 4/19 – EM Spectrum/Optics quiz – cancelled only one quiz this unit Thursday, 4/21 – Last day to re-test on Waves Wednesday, 4/27 - EM Spectrum/Optics quiz Friday, 4/29 – EM Spectrum/Optics test all missing EM Spectrum/Optics work is due (missing work is a zero after you test) Monday, 5/9 – Atomic Physics test all missing Atomic physics work is due (missing work is a zero after you test) Tuesday, 5/17 – Rube Goldberg Project due (test grade) Monday, 5/23 – Bottle Rocket launch day Tuesday, 5/31 – Exam review due (it is 30% of your exam grade) Draw the mind map below on your warm-up sheet. Think back to the article you read after the test last week. Predict what will be drawn under the EM wave section.

Guiding Questions 1. If electromagnetic waves don’t require a medium what is vibrating (causes the disturbance)? (Resource 1) 1. What do wavelength and frequency tell us about a wave? (resource 1) 2. There are seven regions in the EM spectrum. What is used to define the regions? What are the names of the regions? (resource 1 and 2) 3. Summarize key points about each region of the EM spectrum (resource 2). 1. How can you use a diagram to describe the various energy levels of the EM spectrum? (include a diagram of the EM spectrum in your response). (resource 2) 1. What velocity do EM waves travel? (resource 3)

Guiding Questions 1. If electromagnetic waves don’t require a medium what is vibrating (causes the disturbance)? Electromagnetic waves are vibrations of magnetic and electric fields. 1. What do wavelength and frequency tell us about a wave? Wave length of the wave point to point on adjacent waves. Frequency is the number of times a wave occurs during a specified period of time. 2. There are seven regions in the EM spectrum. What is used to define the regions? What are the names of the regions? Radio, micro, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, x-rays, and gamma rays. 1. Summarize key points about each region of the EM spectrum (resource 2) 1. How can you use a diagram to describe the various energy levels of the EM spectrum? (include a diagram of the EM spectrum in your response). (resource 2) 1. What velocity do EM waves travel? Speed of light; 3.0 x 10 8 m/s

EM Spectrum Assignment Draw the EM Spectrum and include the following: 1. Draw the wavelength and frequencies of each EM wave to scale. 1. Label the 7 different EM waves. 2. List two facts you have learned about radio waves, microwaves, infrared waves, ultraviolet waves, x-rays, and gamma rays. 3. Diagram the visible light spectrum and describe how each of the waves in the spectrum are different.
