Scheme of Redemption

Goals of Our Study To learn how God moved from man's problem of sin to His solution of Jesus on the cross To understand how everything in the scriptures relates to, and points to, Jesus and the cross To understand how everything in the Bible reveals God to mankind - who He is and what He is like Get a better understanding of how we got here tonight on the orange carpet 2 of 25

Recap "Scheme of Redemption" - The plan of God, established before creation, to redeem mankind from sin View the Bible as one book with the real division taking place at Genesis 3:6 rather than between Malachi and Matthew This division covers two drastically different worlds: The world prior to sin and the world after sin 3 of 25

Recap Genesis 1-2: God and perfection, man and innocence Strife and tragedy were unheard of Adam did not lie awake at night stressing over how he was going to resolve a problem in his life or how he was going to survive. Genesis 3-12 – “The Background of Redemption” The true division of the Bible takes place at Genesis 3:6. Everything changed here 4 of 25

Recap Two main lines stem from Adam and Eve The righteous lineage of Seth The evil lineage of Cain Eventually these two lines intermingle by way of the marriage These leads to such disaster of: “Every intent of the thoughts of [man’s] heart was only evil continually” The earth was filled with violence. The earth was made corrupt 5 of 25

Recap God is: Grieved in His heart (6:6) Sorry that He had made man (6:6, 7) God sets a “diving reboot” in motion He sets out on a plan to flood the whole earth with water To destroy all life on the earth, of both man and animals However, God would spare man and animals through a man named Noah 6 of 25

Meet Noah Genesis 6:8-9 – But Noah found favor in the eyes of the L ORD …Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his time; Noah walked with God Why is this such a monumental statement? Of all the people on the earth (creation approx. 1500 years old, most likely millions), only Noah found favor with God What was different about Noah? Safe to assume that Noah did not mix himself up with the unrighteous as others in his family did He remained faithful to God He had parents who led him to God 7 of 25

A preacher of righteousness 2 Peter 2:5 refers to Noah as a preacher of righteousness Do you think God would have spared anyone else who repented during the 120 year timespan? You can bet on it! Note that we are never told that Noah’s wife, his sons, nor his son’s wives were upstanding and righteous people. We just assume so. Yet, they were also saved. 8 of 25

Construction of the ark Genesis 6:13-22 God gives Noah the instructions for the ark To be made from gopher wood It was to have rooms Covered inside and outside with pitch Dimensions: 300 cub (L) x 50 cub (W) x 30 cub (H) Was to have a window one cubit from the top and a door in the side of it Was to have three decks 9 of 25

Construction of the ark Putting it into perspective 450 feet long 75 feet wide 45 feet high Titanic: 882(L) x 92(W) x 175(H) Largest passenger ship today is the Royal Caribbean Allure of the Seas: 1,187 (L) x 198(W) x 236 (H above water line) 10 of 25

Construction of the ark According to an Apologetics Press article*, the ark: Had enough space to transport 10 freight trains pulling 52 standard boxcars each (520 total box cars) Total area of approximately 95,700 square feet (about 20 standard basketball courts) Total volume of approximately 1,396,000 cubic feet 11 of 25 * “An Examination of Noah’s Ark and the Global Flood” – Thompson, Harrub http://www.apologeticspress.org/apcontent.aspx?category=13&article=1413

Animals on the ark Genesis 6:19-20 – And of every living thing of all flesh, you shall bring two of every kind into the ark, to keep them alive with you; they shall be male and female. Of the birds after their kind, and of the animals after their kind, of every creeping thing of the ground after its kind, two of every kind will come to you to keep them alive 12 of 25

Animals on the ark Genesis 7:1-3 – Then the Lord said to Noah, “Enter the ark, you and all your household, for you alone I have seen to be righteous before Me in this time. You shall take with you of every clean animal by sevens, a male and his female; and of the animals that are not clean two, a male and his female; also of the birds of the sky, by sevens, male and female, to keep offspring alive on the face of all the earth 13 of 25

Animals on the ark Birds, animals, and creeping things were all to be gathered on the ark 6:20 tells us that the animals would come to Noah, so he didn’t have a great roundup Noah was to take animals “after their kind” Idea is that there didn’t have to be two German Shepherds, two Labrador Retrievers, two coyotes, two wolves, etc. Simply had to be two animals of the canine family 14 of 25

Animals on the ark Of every clean animal, by sevens, a male and female (7 pairs, 14 animals – Kirk’s opinion) 7:8-9 – Of clean animals and animals that are not clean and birds and everything that creeps on the ground, there went into the ark to Noah by twos, male and female, as God had commanded Noah. Of every unclean animal, one pair, a male and female (1 pair, 2 animals) 15 of 25

Final preparations Genesis 6:21-22 – “As for you, take for yourself some of all food which is edible, and gather it to yourself; and it shall be for food for you and for them.” 22 Thus Noah did; according to all that God had commanded him, so he did.” 16 of 25

Final preparations Genesis 7:1,4-6 – Then the Lord said to Noah, “Enter the ark, you and all your household, for you alone I have seen to be righteous before Me in this time...For after seven more days, I will send rain on the earth forty days and forty nights; and I will blot out from the face of the land every living thing that I have made.” Noah did according to all that the Lord had commanded him. Now Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of water came upon the earth. Then Noah and his sons and his wife and his sons’ wives with him entered the ark because of the water of the flood. 17 of 25

Final preparations Genesis 7:15 – So they went into the ark to Noah, by twos of all flesh in which was the breath of life. 16 Those that entered, male and female of all flesh, entered as God had commanded him; and the Lord closed it behind him. 18 of 25

Final preparations Genesis 7:15 – So they went into the ark to Noah, by twos of all flesh in which was the breath of life. Those that entered, male and female of all flesh, entered as God had commanded him; and the Lord closed it behind him. Why is this an important statement? It shows that God was heavily involved with Noah on this effort God was with the animals coming to Noah 19 of 25

The flood Genesis 7:17-20 – Then the flood came upon the earth for forty days, and the water increased and lifted up the ark, so that it rose above the earth. The water prevailed and increased greatly upon the earth, and the ark floated on the surface of the water. The water prevailed more and more upon the earth, so that all the high mountains everywhere under the heavens were covered. The water prevailed fifteen cubits higher, and the mountains were covered. 20 of 25

The flood The water prevailed fifteen cubits higher, and the mountains were covered. “The draft of a boat built for seaworthiness (such as the ark) is generally half the ship’s height. That is, when fully loaded, it sinks in the water to a depth equal to half the height” * Height of ark was 30 cubits Water prevailed 15 cubits above the highest peak God was with Noah!!! 21 of 25 * “An Examination of Noah’s Ark and the Global Flood” – Thompson, Harrub http://www.apologeticspress.org/apcontent.aspx?category=13&article=1413

Depth perception Famous mountains’ heights Mt. Everest – 29,029 feet (5.5 miles) K2 – 28,251 feet (5.3 miles) Mt. McKinley – 20,310 feet (3.8 miles) Kilimanjaro – 19,341 feet (3.6 miles) Based upon what we read earlier, what questions do these numbers raise? The flood was over 5.5 miles deep??? 22 of 25

The flood subsides Psalms 104:5-9 – He established the earth upon its foundations, So that it will not totter forever and ever. You covered it with the deep as with a garment; The waters were standing above the mountains. At Your rebuke they fled, At the sound of Your thunder they hurried away. The mountains rose; the valleys sank down To the place which You established for them. You set a boundary that they may not pass over, So that they will not return to cover the earth. 23 of 25

Days of the flood 40 - days of rain (Genesis 7:4) 110 - additional days of water “prevailing on the earth,” for a total of 150 days (Genesis 7:24) 74 - days until mountains were viewed (from the 17th day of the seventh month to the 1st day of the tenth month: 13 + 30 + 30 + 1) [Genesis 8:5] 40 - days elapsed before Noah sent out the raven (Genesis 8:6-7) 7 - days elapsed before Noah sent out the dove for the first time (8:8) 24 of 25 * “An Examination of Noah’s Ark and the Global Flood” – Thompson, Harrub http://www.apologeticspress.org/apcontent.aspx?category=13&article=1413

Days of the flood 7 - days elapsed before Noah sent out the dove for the second time (Genesis 8:10) 7 - days elapsed before Noah sent out the dove the final time (Genesis 8:12) 29 - days elapsed to correlate with the date of 601st year, 1st month, 1st day (Genesis 8:13) 57 - days elapsed before Noah and the animals disembarked (Genesis 8:14-16) 371 - days total 25 of 25 * “An Examination of Noah’s Ark and the Global Flood” – Thompson, Harrub http://www.apologeticspress.org/apcontent.aspx?category=13&article=1413

Exiting the ark But God remembered Noah and all the beasts and all the cattle that were with him in the ark Remembered: From Hebrew word zakar Indicates a thoughtful mindfulness – not a recalling of something that was forgotten “Remember us in your prayers” God was with Noah, his family, and the animals during their voyage through the flood 26 of 25

Exiting the ark Genesis 8:15-10 – Then God spoke to Noah, saying, “Go out of the ark, you and your wife and your sons and your sons’ wives with you. Bring out with you every living thing of all flesh that is with you, birds and animals and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth, that they may breed abundantly on the earth, and be fruitful and multiply on the earth.” So Noah went out, and his sons and his wife and his sons’ wives with him. Every beast, every creeping thing, and every bird, everything that moves on the earth, went out by their families from the ark. 27 of 25

Exiting the ark Genesis 8:20-22 – Then Noah built an altar to the Lord, and took of every clean animal and of every clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar. The Lord smelled the soothing aroma; and the Lord said to Himself, “I will never again curse the ground on account of man, for the intent of man’s heart is evil from his youth; and I will never again destroy every living thing, as I have done. “While the earth remains, Seedtime and harvest, And cold and heat, And summer and winter, And day and night shall not cease.” 28 of 25

Coming Up Genesis 3-12 – Continue on with studying the background of redemption State of mankind after the flood Babel Intro to Abraham 29 of 25
