MASSI: Measurement/Geometry Alicia Saunders, M.A.

Welcome to the Geometry/Measurement MASSI Webinar Webinar Objectives – Participants will be able to- Select MASSI appropriate to grade level of students Preplan instruction including preparing materials Teach the MASSI using the instructional strategies Make decisions about how much of the MASSI to do in one lesson Collect data on student progress and decide when and how to change or end instruction Use a skills test with students Adapt the MASSI for students with unique needs

MASSI Walk Through Standards/ objectives Materials Essential understanding Evidence-based practices Progress monitoring Grade aligned instruction Skills test Culminating activity

MASSI Walk Through

Curriculum Resource Guides

Build the Essential Understanding

What is included in IR Guide? Overview of Systematic Instruction Importance of Finding a Response Mode Explanation of Instructional Strategies and “how to” Provides sample script for math and ELA skill for each instructional strategy Troubleshooting Q&A – Constant Time Delay (CTD) – System of Least Prompts (LIP) – Model, Lead, Test – Example/Non-example Training

System of Least Prompts (LIP)

Progress Monitoring Snapshot

Table corresponds with “Measurement/Geometry Skills Test” How to administer skills test (teacher says/does, student response, and error correction) “Now”- provides suggested criterion for moving forward (~60% or higher) “Next”- what is to come in lesson and suggestions for each grade level

Build a Grade Aligned Component

Culminating Activity and Full Grade Level Competence

Materials and Worksheets

MASSI: Measurement and Geometry Part 2 Alicia Saunders, M.A.

Composition of a MASSI Real-life Application Build Essential Understanding Grade-Aligned Skills Final Tips

Topic: Measurement/Geometry Elementary- Find area using both tiling and formula; solve for changes in perimeter; and convert units of measurement to solve for area. – Application: Creating a scrapbook Middle- Use formula to calculate area of a rectangle; use nets and formula to calculate surface area; and calculate changes in area. – Application: Preparing posters for spirit club High- Calculate to find a missing attribute when given area and volume. – Application: Preparing a gift to give as a present

Real-life Activity Elementary: Scrapbooking Middle: Posters for Spirit Club High School: Shipping a Picture as a Gift

Essential Understanding 3-5 Identifying perimeter and area 6-8 Identifying area and surface area HS Identifying volume

Elementary: Essential Understanding

Middle: Essential Understanding

High: Essential Understanding

Decision Making Example

Grade-Aligned Component 3rd Use tiling squares to find area. Use formula to calculate area. 4 th Calculate perimeter and solve for changes in perimeter. 5 th Convert units of measurement to solve for area. 6 th Use formula to calculate area of rectangles. 7 th Use nets to find surface area. Use formula to calculate surface area. 8 th Use formula to calculate changes in area. HS Calculate missing attribute (e.g., width) when given area and volume.

Adapting for Unique Needs in the Geometry Lessons

Final Tips Use real-life materials to make the lessons meaningful and fun Be sure to identify how student will respond; program responses into their AT Have everything ready so can teach at a brisk pace Teach to a stop sign until get progress; then move on; remember skills repeat in next section You probably will need to move to new MASSI after 3-4 weeks for student to cover enough standards to do well on the alternate assessment
