The temperance workers gave out pamphlets that tried to get people to stop drinking. They also created many petitions. At one point, a million people had signed. Business owners supported the temperance movement because if their workers were drinking it, then they would not be able to do their work right. Many laws were passed, banning alcohol, but most were repealed. The temperance movement was a big influence on society all the way into the 20 th century.

The strikes were somewhat effective. But, when the Panic of 1837 came, the movement for better working conditions stopped. This is because it became hard to get a job and the workers did not want to risk losing their jobs.
11
By the 1830s, many Americans thought that better public schools were necessary. Then, the first board of education was set up in Massachusetts. Horace Mann was the head of the board. He wanted to create a single school system. Later, most northern states had opened public elementary schools. Private colleges were also founded by churches and other groups.
12
It was very hard for African Americans to get an education. This is because it was illegal to educate them in the south because slave owners did not want a rebellion. But, some colleges did accept African Americans. Oberlin was the first college to accept both women and men. Elizabeth Blackwell was the first woman to get a medical degree.
13
In Conclusion… Americans wanted revival and a better community. They fought to stop the drinking of alcohol. This influences us today. Workers fought for better rights and working conditions. Americans wanted opportunities for a better education.
