33 Father Miguel Hidalgo On Sept. 16, 1810, Father Miguel Hidalgo, leader of a small parish consisting of Indians and Mestizos declared Mexico’s independence from Spain. Soon Hidalgo was killed as was other revolutionaries who followed.
