3 Why Do Teens Begin Using Tobacco? The good news: The number of younger Americans who smoke cigarettes has been going down since the late 1990s. The bad news: Each day, nearly 3,000 kids under the age of 18 try their first cigarette and another 700 become regular, daily smokers. About one-third of these smokers will die prematurely from a smoking-related disease. Now, there are more forms of tobacco to choose from, and many teens are choosing flavored cigars, smokeless tobacco, hookahs, pipes, and electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes).They often choose more than one: nearly 13% of high school students had used more than one type of tobacco product in the past month. 5 Tobacco Addiction Addiction: a mental or physical need for a drug or other substance.Addiction: a mental or physical need for a drug or other substance. *Nicotine is as addictive as cocaine and heroin!*Nicotine is as addictive as cocaine and heroin! Withdrawal: the unpleasant symptoms that someone experiences when he or she stops using an addictive substance. *Withdrawal symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, fever, headaches, dizziness, body aches, cramps, seizures, poor sleeping habits, mood swings.

6 Tobacco Addiction Psychological Dependence: a person’s belief that he or she needs a drug to feel good or function normally. Most people know that tobacco is dangerous. Their need for it outweighs the fear of danger as they connect tobacco use with feeling relaxed. *A person is more “comfortable” high, Self-medicating*A person is more “comfortable” high, Self-medicating

7 Tobacco Addiction Physical Dependence: an addiction in which the body develops a chemical need for a drug. Teens can develop a physical dependence for nicotine much more easily than adults can --> their bodies and brains are not fully developed. Tolerance: the body’s need for larger and larger amounts of a drug to produce the same effect. The body’s need for nicotine causes a person to crave the tobacco product, having users smoke or chew tobacco more often.
