-Units of sugar “ SACCHARIDE ” make up carbohydrates. Simplest Sugars: Monosaccharide Double Sugars: Disaccharide http://apbiosemonefinalreview.pbworks.com/w/page/1 1980943/Biochemistry%20(Ch%204-5) http://maddiesmadhouse.wikispaces.com/Focus+on+Proteins http://www.carbs-information.com/simple-carbohydrates.htm

Functions of Monosachrides → building blocks of disaccharides → major source of fuel for metabolism → provide fuel for the body http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070930174022AAUSpoL Structure of Monosachrides → consist of only one sugar molecule → have a carbon backbone that ranges between 3-7 carbon atoms → sweet taste http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Describe_the_structure_of_a_monosaccharides http://www.kollewin.com/blog/construction-block/ http://positivepersonalfinance.com/2011/04/ 10/money-mantra-4/

What are the functions of disaccharides? http://www.livestrong.com/article/535273-the-function-of-disaccharides/ → They serve as a nutritional source in the human diet. → They sweeten foods for more taste appeal. http://crossfitsweatshop.com/2010/06/30/food-pyramid/http://www.troy.k12.ny.us/academics/bio/skinny/biochemistry.asp Why are disaccharides important? → They are the principal source of energy. → They are the structural components of cells. → They are stored as glycogen in liver of animals. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20060609234929AAan6yJ http://www.lucilleroberts.com/blog/http:/www.luciller oberts.com/blog/trainer-tip-does-working-out-on-an- empty-stomach-burn-more-fat/

Disaccharides are joined together when two monosaccharides are joined. Basically, this happens when the two monosaccharide molecules undergo a condensation reaction that involves the elimination of one small molecule (like water) from the functional groups. http://www.innovateus.net/science/what-are-disaccharides
9
Disaccharide Examples SUCROSE A white, odorless crystalline powder that has a sweet taste. LACTOSE This is found in milk. http://sugaraddictionspecialist.com/ http://taikajuoma.ath.cx/bat/ MALTOSE http://experiencechocolate.com/ This is the same as malt sugar. It is used in the making of soft candies. EX: Chocolates http://www.innovateus.net/science/what-are-disaccharides#What+are+some+common+Disaccharides%3F

What are Polysaccharides? They are chains of sugar units, “saccharides”, that form in configurations from tens to thousands of units long. Polysaccharide Functions → They form the cell wall of plant cells. → They are an energy storage. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090408024524AAsbMUB\ http://www.wisegeek.com/what-are-polysaccharides.htm http://www.natural-preservative.com/pullulan.html http://www.diffen.com/difference/Animal_Cell_vs_Plant_Cell

Polysaccharides Examples STARCH http://pslc.ws/macrog/starch.htm http://cmgm.stanford.edu/biochem200/glycogen/ Structure: Linear; Made up of glucose repeat units. Found in grains, as well as potatoes. Used… →in pressing clothes to keep them from wrinkling →to make a foam packing →one of the chief forms in which plants store food →as an energy boost for the human body once it has turned into sugar http://answers.encyclopedia.com/question/starch-used-plants-107121.html http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_does_starch_do_for_your_body http://janneman27.wordpress.com/2010/08/20/recommended-dietary-allowance-south-african-internet/
12
Polysaccharides Examples CELLULOSE Structure: Linear; Made up of glucose repeat units. Found in the rigid cell wall in plants. Used… →in the wood for building →paper products →cotton →linen →rayon for clothes →in explosives →for films http://www.elmhurst.edu/~chm/vchembook/547cellulose.html http://420chopshop.com/blog/?p=123
13
Polysaccharides Examples GLYCOGEN http://www.sciencedaily.com/articles/g/glycogen.htm http://www.exrx.net/Nutrition/Glycogen.html http://cmgm.stanford.edu/biochem200/glycogen/ Used… →as a fuel in the absence of oxygen →as energy during heavy work →as the principle storage form of glucose in both animal and human cells Structure: Branched. Found primarily in liver and muscle cells. http://www.lucilleroberts.com/blog/http:/www.lucilleroberts.com/blog/trainer-tip-does-working-out-on-an-empty-stomach-burn-more-fat/
14
CHITIN Polysaccharides Examples Structure: Unbranched. Found abundantly in nature. Used… →as the exoskeleton (internal structure) for insects, crabs, shrimps, lobsters, and of other invertebrates http://www.euchis.org/ http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Where_is_chitin_commonly_found_in_nature http://www.scientificpsychic.com/fitness/carbohydrates2.html http://users.rcn.com/jkimball.ma.ultranet/BiologyPages/I/InsectHormones.html
