Presented by: Eastern Research Group, Inc. February 23, 2005 Status Report to the Stationary Sources Joint Forum: Task 2: Control Technology Analysis

2 Overview Objective:Provide costs and impacts for options used to control emissions of NOx, SO 2, PM, VOC, and Ammonia NOx from EGUs EGUs firing coal – focus of work has been on this category. EGUs firing oil and gas -Database of sources has been assembled. Includes baseline NOx emissions and existing controls. Other Analysis will start after NOx control options for coal-fired EGUs have been identified  NOx from non-EGUs  SO 2  PM, VOC, and ammonia

3 NOx From Coal-fired EGUs Assemble database of all EGUs in WRAP Profile state of the art NOx combustion controls Identify control scenario’s Calculate costs and impacts of scenarios

4 Assemble Database of All EGUs in WRAP Data obtained from EPA databases  CAMD  EIA 767  EIA 423 Data from telephone contacts w/utilities  Coal and combustor properties Database is available on website

5 Information in Database Location Capacity (actual/nameplate) Combustor type Baseline emissions Heat input Coal moisture and nitrogen content Combustor volume, volumetric heat rate, and residence time CO limit Coal mine origin NOx regulations applicable In-service date Primary fuel Wet/dry bottom Low NOx control equipment and manufacturer

6 State of the Art Combustion Controls Contacted vendors and conducted literature search to identify latest NOx combustion controls  Cost and performance data  Sources in commercial use  Profiles of the newest technologies and tables summarizing their performance and costs are available on the website. Next step  Summary table of emission limits/reductions for combinations of controls with coal type, combustor type, and combustor parameters.

7 Control Scenarios Control scenarios can be based on requiring a specific control technology, or meeting target emission reductions or emission limits. One set of options can be applied to all units, or separate options can be applied to different subcategories Next steps  Summary of initial control options

8 Costs and Impacts of Scenarios Costs for LNB and OFA from CAMD analysis have been updated to 2004 $. Costs and emission reductions/limits for new state of the art controls have been provided by vendors. After initial control scenarios are set, costs and impacts of control scenarios will be calculated
