your Drill your own disc brake rotors ! Be the envy of your friends, make your bike standout ! BMAC Tech Tips March 5, 2016
2
Many older bikes have solid brake discs CB750 Honda front disc shown above
3
Why drill holes in a brake disc ? -Increases disc cooling -Reduces weight -Greatly improves wet weather braking -Looks really cool !
4
Remove and clean disc
5
-Develop your hole pattern -Assymetrical patterns are best
6
-Check the internet for patterns -Symmetrical patterns can create resonances and noise while braking -I designed my own curved 3 hole, 4 hole, 5 hole pattern -Then I added a 2 hole pattern between the 3/4/5 pattern
7
Final pattern chosen
8
You’ll need a hammer & center punch
9
Center punch the pattern onto the disc
10
-Use a HSS 1/8” drill for pilot drilling -Follow up with 1/4” drill for final hole size
11
-You will need a cutting fluid -And WEAR YOUR SAFTEY GLASSES !
12
-Set drill speed to lowest setting -Drill all holes with 1/8” drill first -Then follow with 1/4” drill
13
-Use a 90 degree countersink bit -Countersink all holes, both sides
14
- Again use slowest drill press speed
15
- Example of countersinking depth
16
- You’re all done !
