FACS I Fibers and Fabrics
2
Why study fibers and fabrics? 1. Each fiber has different properties 2.Each is cared for differently 3.Cared for properly, they will look better and last longer.
3
Fibers and Fabrics A. All fabrics are made from small hairlike fibers. B. Fibers are twisted together to form yarns. C. Yarns are: a. woven b. knitted c. pressed into fabrics.

5
Fibers and Fabrics 1. Natural Fibers - have been around since the beginning of time, and are of 2 main types. a. Animal (protein fibers) i. wool ii. camel hair iii. silk iv. other animal fibers

10
Fiber and Fabric F. May fade G. Weakened by perspiration H. May mildew I. Some are eaten by moths
11
Fiber and Fabrics III. MAN MADE OR MANUFACTURED FIBERS CHARACTERISTICS https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7ih pZhCj6k
12
Fiber and Fabric 1. made from raw materials - chemicals, many of them petroleum 2.do not occur in nature as fibers 3.were first made in 1910 to replace natural fibers so they look a lot like natural fiber 4.easy to care for 5.durable - will not easily wear out
13
Fiber and Fabrics 6. Resist wrinkling 7. Hold Pleats 8. Less absorbent 9. Do not adjust well to temperature 10. Hold greasy stains
14
Fiber and Fabrics B. Examples of manmade fibers 1. Polyester http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=100% 25+Polyester+Fabric&FORM=RESTAB 2. Rayon 3. Nylon
15
Fiber and Fabric 4. Acrylic 5. Acetate 6. Spandex Most manufactured fibers were created to replace or imitate natural fibers. Nulon, for example, resembles silk. Acrylic takes the place of wool in blankets.
16
Fiber and Fabrics IV. FABRIC CONSTRUCTION A. There are several methods of creating fabric from yarn. a. Woven - fabrics that are woven generally hold their shape better and are stronger than knits. b. The type of weave and the characteristics of the fiber determines the characteristics of the finished fabric.
17
Fiber and Fabric http://www.bing.com/search?q=image+of+wo ven+fabric&form=IE10TR&src=IE10TR&pc=L NJB B. There are 3 basic weaves 1. plain weave 2.twill weave 3.satin weave
18
Fiber and Fabric Why do you think 2 different fibers might be mixed before spinning or weaving? C. Knit Fabrics 1. Knit fabrics are constructed by pulling loops of yarn, creating interlocking row.
19
Fiber and Fabric C. Other fabric construction methods. 1. Felt 2.Bonded fabrics 3.Quilted Fabrics http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=bonde d+fabrics&qpvt=bonded++fabrics&qpvt=bond ed++fabrics&FORM=IGRE
20
Fiber and Fabric V. COLOR AND OTHER FINISHES A. Fabric Finishes are any special treatment that improve the appearance, feel, or performance of the fabric. B.Color or design can be added at various stages of the fabric production
21
Fiber and Fabrics One example of a fabric finish is colorfast. This means that the color will remain the same over a period of time.
22
Fabric and Fiber VI. DAILY CLOTHING CARE A. Clothes that are taken care of properly will look better and last longer. B.Daily after wearing or changing a. check for any stains b. does it need any minor repairs c. is it clean enough to wear again or does it need washing
23
Fiber and Fabric d. put it where it belongs
24
Fiber and Fabrics VII. CLEANING CLOTHES A. Sorting - separate clothes into groups by a. care instructions b. color c. weight d. lint giving or lint receiving e. amount of soil
25
Fiber and Fabric B. Prep for Laundering 1. empty pockets 2.close zippers 3.fasten velcro C. Treat Stains 1. Treat the stain as soon as possible 2.Check the label on the product

27
Fiber and Fabrics VII. MACHINE WASHING A. Washing machines differ so it is a good idea to check out how the one you want to use works. a. select the water temperature b. select the washer cycle c. add laundry products d. add items to be washed
28
Fiber and Fabric VIII. HAND WASHING IX. DRYING CLOTHES A. Check the care label and follow the manufacturers instructions. They will tell you how to dry the item. a. machine drying b. line drying c. drying flat

Fibers and Fabrics Chapter Key Points -Fibers are either natural or manufactured. -Each fiber has its own characteristics -fabrics can be woven, knit, or constructed in other ways -Fabric finishes are designed to improve fabric in some way
32
Fibers and Fabrics Key Points -Taking proper care of clothes starts with inspecting them after wear -Stains can usually be removed if treated promptly -Pay attention to care label information when laundering clothes.
33
Fibers and Fabrics Key Points -Some clothes must be dry cleaned instead of laundered -Storing clothes correctly keeps them in good condition
