Definition  Parallelism is the use of components in a sentence that are grammatically the same; or similar in their construction, sound, meaning or meter. Parallelism examples are found in literary works as well as in ordinary conversations.

Examples That Are Parallel  Vote for Thomas because he is intelligent, caring, honest and hardworking.  Nancy read a book while Joe watched television.  We are giving away our furniture, selling our house and moving to Spain.

Examples That Are Parallel  “My fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” - John F. Kennedy  "Today's students can put dope in their veins or hope in their brains. If they can conceive it and believe it, they can achieve it. They must know it is not their aptitude but their attitude that will determine their altitude." - Jesse Jackson

Examples That Are Not Parallel  Mary likes hiking, swimming, and to ride a bicycle.  The production manager was asked to write his report quickly, accurate ly, and in a detailed manner.  The teacher said that he was a poor student because he waited until the last minute to study for the exam, completed his lab problems in a careless manner, and his motivation was low.

Tips and Tricks  When using parallel structure, the main rule to remember is that the things in the list must be the same grammatical form.  First look for the coordinating conjunctions in a sentence to find potential parallelism.  Without parallelism, writing will sound choppy and will not sound correct.

Parallelism Impact  This method adds balance and rhythm to sentences giving ideas a smoother flow and thus can be persuasive because of the repetition it employs.

Cold Read - Norfolk in William Shakespeare Henry VIII, Act 3, Scene 2 “My lord, we have Stood here observing him: Some strange commotion Is in his brain: he bites his lip, and starts; Stops on a sudden, looks upon the ground, Then, lays his finger on his temple; straight, Springs out into fast gait; then, stops again, Strikes his breast hard; and anon, he casts His eye against the moon: in most strange postures We have seen him set himself.”

Cold Read - “A Tale of Two Cities” by Charles Dickens  “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair.” 
