The SPAN ProjectStoke-on-Trent LEA START using data to help learning We collect a lot of data about our learning environment but do we use it effectively? Who sees the data? Do they know how to use it? Is the data in a format that is useful? How can the data be used within the ‘learning process’ by everyone who has an interest in it?
17
The SPAN ProjectStoke-on-Trent LEA START Who has access to the data & how do they use it? Is your data trapped at Senior Management level? Can the teachers use the data whenever and wherever they want it? Can teachers work together on live data, in real-time? Do they understand what the data is showing them?
18
The SPAN ProjectStoke-on-Trent LEA START Who has access to the data & how do they use it? So apart from the staff who else may want to see the data? Pupils SPAN has already shown that involving pupils in moving their own learning forward can have a huge impact on achievement. ParentsSPAN brings parents into the learning environment in a positive way, so why not empower parents with data about progress?
19
The SPAN ProjectStoke-on-Trent LEA START So what does it do now? Collects a variety of different data sources about student progress in one place. Delivers a range of different ways to measure ‘estimated likely outcomes’ Allows a ‘Target Setting’ process to be delivered involving teachers, Head of Subject, Head of Year and Head teacher. Collects on-going teacher assessments. Helps staff use the data effectively with on-line hints and effective use of graphs. Allows an effective ‘Assessment Calendar’ to be created within the learning environment.
20
The SPAN ProjectStoke-on-Trent LEA START So what does it do now? The following screens show some of the ways that access to data is provided. START is web-based, secure and available anywhere there is an Internet Connection. The systems is already live in 3 Local Education Authorities and will be live in a further 16 Local Authorities during the Autumn Term. START is a result of a collaboration between DfES, Lancaster University and three LEAs – Stoke-on-Trent, Manchester & Sandwell.

24
The SPAN ProjectStoke-on-Trent LEA START So where may it go? Let’s link the work from SPAN, where staff, parents & pupils share their perceptions on learning. Why not add the data? Why not bring pupils and parents into the target setting process. And let’s empower them by helping them understand what it all means.
