7. Why is there a need to do something different?? Only 5 of the 19 schools in the West Region made AYP last year 5 West Region schools are in Year 4 or greater in the Corrective Schools process 3 rd Graders in the West Region had a decrease of 27.5% on spring 2009 NJASK LAL scores when compared to 2008. 3 rd Graders in the West Region had a decrease of 21.2% on spring 2009 NJASK mathematics scores when compared to 2008. 4 th Graders in the West Region had a decrease of 30.2% on spring 2009 NJASK LAL scores when compared to 2008. 4 th Graders in the West Region had a decrease of 28.2% on spring 2009 NJASK mathematics scores when compared to 2008. HSPA vs SRA percentages are far beyond the 90/10 ratio required by the state of NJ.

12. Purpose of a Data Wall The primary purpose of Data Walls is to make instruction more prescriptive and intentional. The secondary purpose of Data Walls is to measure the effectiveness of teacher treatments. The final purpose of Data Walls is to empower students and remove the veil of secrecy from education.

The data shows how scores have changed over the last 4 months since afterschool tutoring began. Conclusion Based on the data, I conclude that Afterschool tutoring is/ is not helping boost test scores. Problem Test scores have decreased 10 percent over the last 4 years. 21. The West Region Data Wall construction First Panel: Includes tables, charts, and graphs that illustrate state test scores for the school and district. There may also be narrative comments, such as “84% of our students are not proficient in mathematics according to the state test scores (Spring ‘09) and 78% are not proficient according to the formative assessment given o 10.3.09. A review of the last three years of data show consistent decrease on both state and district measurements, with particular struggles in problems- solving portion of the math assessments.”

In addition, we have added the following intervention strategies for all non- proficient students (Be specific).”

24. Summation of Data walls Assessment is effective when it informs practice. Doing the assessing is only the first step. Analyzing what the information reveals and using this information to plan instructional experiences is the purpose of assessment. Assessment and treatment is the key to effective teaching and learning.

26. A War Room is… a room in the building of a military, political, or business organization equipped with the technical means to gather information, plan strategy or direct activities. How does this apply to schools??

27. War Rooms In a professional learning community, data analysis encourages collaboration and discussion among members of a grade level and across the school. Data analysis is an evolving, collegial event, not an isolated activity.

Benefits of Fidelity to the use of War Rooms Encourages ownership of information (results) Influences choices in instructional strategies Promotes a wider repertoire of instructional strategies Team approach builds collaboration Allows school teams to set targets for the school, the grade, for small groups of students and/or individual students Useful in establishing guided reading groups (running record data wall) Quickly establishes those students who require additional assistance (intervention) Useful for tracking comprehension skills

Attributes of a War Room Its located in a centralized location Post-its, index cards or the like are used to represent each student in the school Color codes allow for quick analysis Boards and categories should be fluid Group discussions and meetings should occur around the conclusions. 34. Next Steps …what is expected Every instructor in every classroom in the West Region will have a data wall. (Yes that includes PE, Art and Music). Every school in the West Region will have a school- wide data wall in its lobby (main entrance). Every school will have a War Room. The regional office staff will offer assistance for implementation and fidelity to this initiative, where needed.
