Non-Negotiables 1. We respect whomever the speaker is that has the floor. 2. Hands up signify that all talking is to cease and attention is to be given to the front of the facilitator. 3. We all will participate fully to provide the opportunity for growth of the group. 4. The facilitator will move the agenda forward to represent a professional respect for all participants time. 5. We as a group reserve the right to ‘Parking Lot’ tangent subject matter to be revisited after the agenda is complete or for a later time.
3
Question of the day??? Can you name three ways to positively effect student achievement?
4
Some Answers 1. Teach what will be tested. (CPIs, lesson plans, objectives) 2. Differentiate instruction to teach to the students modalities. (Principal Barillarri’s Presentation) 3. Teach prescriptively. (CAPA, Cambridge, Learnia and PSA) 4. Assess often. (Summer reading initiative, Formative Assessments, Dip Sticking) 5. Create urgency in both teachers, students and parents. (Data Walls and War Rooms)

Presentation Objective Through the discussions, illustrations and examples in this presentation, 100 percent of West Region Principals will be able to: Give an accurate definition of a Data Wall and a War Room State the purpose of Data Walls and War Rooms Turn-key this information to their staffs resulting in data rich environment that are useful and meaningful to both students and teachers

Why is there a need to do something different?? Only 5 of the 19 schools in the West Region made AYP last year 5 West Region schools are in Year 4 or greater in the Corrective Schools process 3 rd Graders in the West Region had a decrease of 27.5% on spring 2009 NJASK LAL scores when compared to 2008. 3 rd Graders in the West Region had a decrease of 21.2% on spring 2009 NJASK mathematics scores when compared to 2008. 4 th Graders in the West Region had a decrease of 30.2% on spring 2009 NJASK LAL scores when compared to 2008. 4 th Graders in the West Region had a decrease of 28.2% on spring 2009 NJASK mathematics scores when compared to 2008. HSPA vs SRA percentages are far beyond the 90/10 ratio required by the state of NJ.
8
We have lots of data… NJASK Summer Reading Assessments Formative Assessments (Learnia, PSA) Teacher made assessments Unit Tests
9
Drill Down to Teachers/Schools use of data High functioning schools will use the data so that instruction is characterized by precision and teaching is focused on the learning needs of each student. There is no value in assessing students if it does not impact learning and instruction.
10
What is a data wall?? Mrs. Irby-Jackson-??? Dr. Wilson-??? Mrs. Blamo-Hawthorne-???
11
Generic… In the west region a two or three dimensional display of information; it can be a free standing piece or be affixed to an actual wall. an effective visual tool for representing the results of student assessments, along with an instructor’s treatment and monitored results of said treatment A data wall is…
12
Purpose of a Data Wall The primary purpose of Data Walls is to make instruction more prescriptive and intentional. The secondary purpose of Data Walls is to measure the effectiveness of teacher treatments. The final purpose of Data Walls is to empower students and remove the veil of secrecy from education.
13
After the boards are up then what? Start the conversations… What is helpful about this data? Who are the students we need to target for additional support/intervention? What are the learning expectations we must address with greater precision? What instructional strategies will assist us in improving student achievement? What were the results of the interventions?
14
Good Bad Clear problem Specific intervention Did it succeed Is a change of prescription needed No problem No intervention No effect No conclusions Just pretty colorful graphs Good Data Walls vs Bad Data Walls

Sample of a “Good” Data Wall? Intervention We’re doing this intervention to help improve scores. Effect Here is how this intervention is working. The data shows how scores have changed over the last 4 months since afterschool tutoring began. Conclusion Based on the data, I conclude that Afterschool tutoring is/ is not helping boost test scores. Problem Test scores have decreased 10 percent over the last 4 years. Intervention: AFTERSCHOOL TUTORING Summary of what you’re doing, who you’re tutoring blah blah blah blah blah hopefully you use an intervention that has some kind of scientific basis and discuss this blah blah and more blah. Planning the Data Wall Problem Intervention Effect Conclusion
21
The West Region Data Wall construction First Panel: Includes tables, charts, and graphs that illustrate state test scores for the school and district. There may also be narrative comments, such as “84% of our students are not proficient in mathematics according to the state test scores (Spring ‘09) and 78% are not proficient according to the formative assessment given o 10.3.09. A review of the last three years of data show consistent decrease on both state and district measurements, with particular struggles in problems- solving portion of the math assessments.”
22
The West Region Data Wall example of construction Second Panel: Includes data on teaching strategies associated with mathematics followed by another brief narrative, such as, “The charts above show that the number of mathematics assessments including student writing have been stagnate in the past three years. Those assessments have emphasized the problem-solving portions of the state test. However the charts also show a strong increase this semester in interdisciplinary mathematics instruction, with the frequency of math instruction in music, art, physical education, technology, science, and social studies much greater for the most recent school year than was the case in earlier years.”
23
The West Region Data Wall cont… Right Panel: Includes inferences and conclusions, such as, “The data suggests that inter-disciplinary instruction in math and writing have both been effective strategies to improve student performance. Therefore, we have planned to expand these strategies (Be specific) We remain very concerned about the 76% of students who are not proficient on the math portion of the state tests and have developed individualized learning plans for each of these students. In addition, we have added the following intervention strategies for all non- proficient students (Be specific).”
24
Summation of Data walls Assessment is effective when it informs practice. Doing the assessing is only the first step. Analyzing what the information reveals and using this information to plan instructional experiences is the purpose of assessment. Assessment and treatment is the key to effective teaching and learning.
25
What is a War Room? Mr. Bey??? Dr. West??? Mr. Outlaw???
26
A War Room is… a room in the building of a military, political, or business organization equipped with the technical means to gather information, plan strategy or direct activities. How does this apply to schools??
27
War Rooms In a professional learning community, data analysis encourages collaboration and discussion among members of a grade level and across the school. Data analysis is an evolving, collegial event, not an isolated activity.
28
Benefits of Fidelity to the use of War Rooms Encourages ownership of information (results) Influences choices in instructional strategies Promotes a wider repertoire of instructional strategies Team approach builds collaboration Allows school teams to set targets for the school, the grade, for small groups of students and/or individual students Useful in establishing guided reading groups (running record data wall) Quickly establishes those students who require additional assistance (intervention) Useful for tracking comprehension skills
29
Attributes of a War Room Its located in a centralized location Post-its, index cards or the like are used to represent each student in the school Color codes allow for quick analysis Boards and categories should be fluid Group discussions and meetings should occur around the conclusions. Teachers should own and manage the information
30
War Room Example #1
31
War Room Example #2
32
War Room Example #3
33
When should we expect big moves on our War Room Board? Mr. Allen??? Ms. Dinkins??? Dr. Johnson-Green???
34
Next Steps …what is expected Every instructor in every classroom in the West Region will have a data wall. (Yes that includes PE, Art and Music). Every school in the West Region will have a school- wide data wall in its lobby (main entrance). Every school will have a War Room. The regional office staff will offer assistance for implementation and fidelity to this initiative, where needed.
35
Assessment Through the discussions, illustrations and examples in this presentation, 100 percent of West Region Principals will be able to: Give an accurate definition of a Data Wall and a War Room State the purpose of Data Walls and War Rooms Turn-key this information to their staffs resulting in data rich environment that are useful and meaningful to both students and teachers (Deadline-10.27.09)
36
Questions Should classroom data walls include student names? What data should we utilize? We don’t have the conclusion to the interventions yet? Others???
