Preparing the configuration.xml files Setting up the Office source SCCM Application-model deep-dive SCCM Package-model deep-dive SCCM Application-model and the Cloud Updating considerations when using SCCM Module Overview

Preparing the configuration.xml files

Download the Office Deployment Tool –Always check for the latest version monthly! Download.xml Install.xml –Don’t set SourcePath to “”, rather, remove it entirely Uninstall.xml Tip – open your.xml files with IE as a sanity check! Preparing the configuration.xml files

PREPARING THE CONFIGURATION FILES demo

Setting up the Office Source files

Create your main installation source and share –Set permissions CCMCache.\Program Files\Microsoft Office 15.\root\office15.\Data\Updates Setting up the Office Source files

SETTING UP THE OFFICE SOURCE FILES demo

SCCM Application-model deep-dive

Direction is to move towards the Application-model –Application Catalog –Detection Rules –Supersedence CCMCache.\Program Files\Microsoft Office 15.\root\office15.\Data\Updates SCCM Application-model deep-dive

LET’S CREATE AN OFFICE 365 PROPLUS SCCM APPLICATION DEPLOYMENT demo

Downloads to local cache and runs locally –No easy way to run from a distribution point Must maintain separate sources, else you may push ~1gb per build kept Due to CCMCache, does not leverage the delta downloading of Office bits –Updating the SCCM source content downloads all files to CCMCache again If you re-run setup.exe, it will be a full install each time! SCCM Application-model considerations

SCCM Package-model deep-dive

As needed, you can install directly from the distribution point (DP) –Setup.exe will only download deltas in this scenario –No CCMCache stored locally If installing from the DP package share, you can freely update the source content without worrying about the CCMCache If you re-run setup.exe, it will be a full install each time! –But the Package-model will only download deltas when run from the DP Stay tuned for a look at the SCCM Application-model using the Content Delivery Network (CDN) in the Cloud SCCM Package-model deep-dive

LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT AN OFFICE 365 PROPLUS SCCM PACKAGE-MODEL DEPLOYMENT demo

SCCM Application-model and the Cloud

~1mb download to CCMCache –Update your install.xml as needed with little worry over the size of the CCMCache No builds stored on distribution points With no builds found in CCMCache, setup.exe will automatically pull the build from the content delivery network (CDN) Like the benefit of installing from the DP with the Package- model, installing from the CDN will also only download deltas SCCM Application-model and the Cloud

HOW TO SETUP AN OFFICE 365 PROPLUS SCCM APPLICATION-MODEL DEPLOYMENT USING THE CONTENT DELIVERY NETWORK demo

All the benefits of the Application-model –Application Catalog –Detection Rules –Application Supersedence All the benefits fo the Package-model –Run from the “DP” (the CDN) No CCMCache content –Only deltas are downloaded –Freely update the content source since it is <1mb SCCM Application-model and the Cloud

Updating considerations when using SCCM

UpdatePath\\server\share\ C:\Preload\Office http://internalApps/Office/ "" Optional. If UpdatePath is not set (“”), Click-to-Run installations obtain updates from the Microsoft Click-to-Run source (Content Delivery Network or CDN). This is by default. If UpdatePath is set to empty (""), updates are obtained from the Microsoft Click-to-Run source, CDN. UpdatePath can specify a network, local, or HTTP path of a Click-to-Run source. Environment variables can be used for network or local paths. If you use Group Policy and the Office 2013 Administrative Template files (ADMX/ADML), you can set UpdatePath by using the Update Path policy setting. You can find this policy setting under Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Microsoft Office 2013 (Machine)\Updates.Office 2013 Administrative Template files (ADMX/ADML) Updating considerations when using SCCM

Use the built-in Update mechanism in Office 365 ProPlus –Updated and ready within 5-8 minutes on average Use the Application-model to pull from the CDN –SCCM controls the Update timing Implement a hybrid of the solutions demo’d today –No local DP? Use the CDN –Metered Internet? Push/pull to a local file server UpdatePaths point to local file server –Large site? Use DP, DP Groups, BranchCache –Will you be updating during Business Hours? Updating considerations for large Enterprises

WHY THE NEW UPDATE GROUP POLICY SETTINGS AND SCCM MIGHT NOT MIX FOR SOME LARGE ENTERPRISES demo
