What are the five senses? TouchSightHearingTasteSmell
3
What organ system controls the sense of Touch? The Integumentary System
5
What is in the Integumentary system? SkinHairNails
6
What is the skin? The largest organ in the body Protective Has many types of sensory receptors.
8
Protective The skin keeps water in Keeps dirt and bacteria out When you are cut, can grow back closing the cut.
9
Temperature control The skin helps regulate the bodies temperate Does this in two ways
10
#1 : Cool the body Route blood near the surface Lift hairs sweat
11
#2 : Heat the body Route blood away from the surface Pulls hairs down Cause muscles to shake
12
What allows the skin to sense? Receptors
14
5 types of receptors PainColdHeatPressureVibration
15
#1 : Pain receptors Most important receptor Lets the brain know the body is hurt Very close to the top of the skin
16
#2 : Cold receptors Separate Heat & Cold receptors Deep in the skin
17
#3 : Heat receptors Separate Heat & Cold receptors Near the surface
18
#4 : Pressure receptors Feels contact Lets us know if we are in contact with something Close to the surface
19
#5 : Vibration Receptors Feels shaking & vibrations Good to find food & not become food Near the surface
20
How does the Skin & the Brain work together ? Feedback mechanisms
21
What is a feed back mechanism? Four steps
22
#1: The brain gives an order Example: The brain tells the skin to sweat.
23
#2: The organ does the Brain’s order Example: The skin to sweats.
24
#3: The organ sends information to the brain Example: The skin tells the brain it is getting cold.
25
#4: The brain gives a different order Example: The brain tells the skin to stop sweating.
