2 NUMBER — the form a word takes to indicate whether the word is SINGULAR or PLURAL.  SINGULAR — a word that refers to one person, place, thing, or idea. EXAMPLES:  PLURAL — a word that refers to more than one person, place, thing, or idea. EXAMPLES:

3 Hints: Most nouns that end in S are plural Most nouns that end in S are plural Verbs that end in S are generally singular Verbs that end in S are generally singular A gerund or infinitive phrase used as a complete subject takes the singular verb. 5 A COMPOUND SUBJECT consists of two or more subjects that are joined by a conjunction and that have the same verb.  Subjects joined by AND usually take a PLURAL verb.  Subjects joined by OR or NOR take a SINGULAR verb.  Hint: When a singular subject and a plural subject are joined by OR or NOR, the verb agrees with the subject nearest to the verb. Example: Neither the beans nor the chicken is fully cooked.
