NUMBER — the form a word takes to indicate whether the word is SINGULAR or PLURAL. SINGULAR — a word that refers to one person, place, thing, or idea. EXAMPLES: PLURAL — a word that refers to more than one person, place, thing, or idea. EXAMPLES:

INDEFINITE PRONOUNS — refers to a noun that may or may not be named. Example: Please take everything you will need for the journey. SINGULAR — anybody, anyone, anything, each, either, everybody, everyone, everything, neither, nobody, no one, nothing, one, somebody, someone, and something. Hint: Singular pronouns end in one, body, or thing, along with indefinite pronouns each, either, neither PLURAL — both, few, many, and several. SINGULAR / PLURAL — all, any, more, most, none, and some (DEPENDS ON THEIR MEANING IN THE SENTENCE) Example: Most of the exercises were finished. (P) Example: Most of the work was completed. (S)

A COMPOUND SUBJECT consists of two or more subjects that are joined by a conjunction and that have the same verb. Subjects joined by AND usually take a PLURAL verb. Subjects joined by OR or NOR take a SINGULAR verb. Hint: When a singular subject and a plural subject are joined by OR or NOR, the verb agrees with the subject nearest to the verb. Example: Neither the beans nor the chicken is fully cooked.
