Siphonic Drainage History
Concept invented in Finland by Olavi Ebling with first major installation in Sweden in The Knowledge Base has remained in Europe European University & Governmental Research together with Industry Developments have seen the technology advance Technical and Commercial benefits have led to the spread of the technology throughout Europe and Asia

ASPE 45 Siphonic Standards
IPC and UPC Codes permit Engineered Systems (Drain Performance Standard) ASME/ANSI Siphonic Roof Drain Standard published in 2005 (System Design/Performance Standard) ASPE 45 Siphonic Drainage Design Standard improving upon European Standards
7
Traditional Gravity Drainage Systems?
Why Change from Traditional Gravity Drainage Systems? Traditional Gravity Drainage Systems Do work, However….. They are Extremely Inefficient
8
Principles of Gravity Drainage
Vortex motion Gravity drainage requires a large amount of Air to move a small amount of water. Extremely Inefficient
9
Restricting Factors within
Gravity Systems: 1. The water flow-rate is dictated by the available GRADIENT. 2. Multiple rainwater down pipes in locations dictated by the hydraulics of the gravity system rather than the DESIGNER. 3. The only driving force is the limited depth or ‘HEAD’ of water above the roof drain.

15
PRINCIPLES Of Gravity and Siphonic Drainage (Negative Pressure)
16
Positive Pressure PAtmos gh As the water depth increases –
so does the flow rate PAtmos gh
17
Positive Pressure PAtmos gh
This is due to the increase in positive pressure at the pipe entry. PAtmos gh
18
Siphonic Drainage - How it works
Negative Pressure A simple siphon (Dad’s Car) Head driving flow Flow out
19
Siphonic Drainage - How it works
PAtmos - gh The siphonic pipework acts in a similar way but in reverse. The inducer on the roof drain prevents air ingress to the pipe work. The negative pressure increases with height of the building
20
Siphonic Drainage - How it works
PAtmos - gh The greater the negative pressure the higher the flow rate in the system.

22
Siphonic Drainage - How it works Gravity flow in pipework
Priming of main pipe work Stage 1 - Wavy flow (Typical Gravity Flow) Air above water Gravity flow in pipework
23
Siphonic Drainage - How it works
Priming of main pipe work Stage 2 - Plug flow Plug of water filling whole pipe at high velocities which achieves self-scouring. Air pockets driven down pipework Test have shown that self-scouring is achieved at as low as 10% to 15% of the Design Rainfall Rate.
24
Siphonic Drainage - How it works Water filling whole pipe
Priming of main pipe work Stage 3 - Bubble flow Water filling whole pipe Air bubbles in suspension at high velocity
25
Siphonic Drainage - How it works Water Filling ENTIRE Pipe
Priming of main pipe work Stage 4 - Full-bore flow Water Filling ENTIRE Pipe
26

Review of Technical Benefits of the Siphonic Roof Drainage System
WADE HYDROMAX® Siphonic Roof Drainage System 1. Smaller Diameter pipe work is installed Horizontally without GRADE. 2. Fewer and Smaller Diameter Pipes run full-bore with self-scouring properties. 3. A significant Reduction in Below Grade Drainage (common range is from 20% to 60%). 4. Rainwater down pipes Routed to the Engineer’s Preferred Locations which frees up valuable building space.
28
5. Routing of rainwater down pipes to the perimeter of buildings Eliminates Below Grade Drainage Under the Building Floor. 6. Easy co-ordination of services due to pipe work running level. 7. Fewer pipes = Reduced construction time and cost. 8. Ability to route rainwater pipes to pond retention/water recycling. 9. Siphonic can be used for Engineer defined Controlled Flow and/or Controlled Discharge

31
HOW DOES IT WORK WADE HYDROMAX® Siphonic Drainage
The INDUCER Plate on our WADE HYDROMAX® Drain eliminates air entry to the pipe work allowing the piping system to run Horizontal and at Full Bore to carry the rainwater The elimination of air into the pipe work, together with engineered hydraulics, generates a High Performance Siphon The entire height of the building is utilized as the driving force for this highly efficient Rainwater Drainage Solution
