Trafalgar Square One of the most beautiful places in London. In the middle of the square stands a tall column. It is a monument to Admiral Nelson. There are two beautiful fountains in the square. They are in front of the National Gallery.

Admiral Nelson Admiral Nelson was a famous English admiral. On October 21, 1805 the English fleet under his command had a victory over the French fleet in the battle of Trafalgar. Admiral Nelson died in this battle.

National Gallery One of the best picture galleries of the world. It has more than 2,000 pictures from the 13th to the early 20th century. Every day a lot of tourists visit this fine building with beautiful columns.

Hyde Park Used to be a hunting forest for the Kings of England
In the middle of Hyde park there is the Serpentine – a lake in which you can swim or go out in a boat Famous for Speaker’s Corner. Anyone can make a speech here.

The Royal Albert Hall In front of the Albert Hall there is a monument to Prince Albert. Prince Albert was Queen Victoria’s husband. He died at the age of 42. Westminster Abbey One of the most famous churches in London, more than nine hundred years old. It is the Cathedral where all English monarchs are crowned. The Abbey is famous for the Poet’s Corner. Many great writers are buried there.

St. Paul’s Cathedral The famous English architect Sir Christopher Wren built it in the 17th century after the Great Fire. It took him 35 years. It is a beautiful building with many columns and towers.

Covent Garden Covent Garden, or the Royal Opera House is one of the most famous London theatres. It is situated in the centre of the vegetable market.

British Museum The British Museum was founded in 1753.
The British Museum Library has got about 6 million books. In the centre of the museum there is a large Reading Room. The Museum has a wonderful art gallery.

The Thames London stands on the River Thames. There are 27 bridges over the Thames in London. The most famous of them is the Tower Bridge. It was built in 1894 near the Tower of London.

Tower The Tower of London was a fortress, a palace, a prison and the King’s Zoo. Now it is a museum. William the Conqueror built it in the 11th century. There are always black ravens in the Tower of London

The Houses of Parliament
Westminster Palace or the Houses of Parliament was built in the 19th century by the architect Charles Barry. Members of Parliament from all over Britain meet in the Houses of Parliament.

Big Ben Big Ben is the name of the clock and the bell of the clock tower of the Houses of Parliament. The clock and the bell got their names after Sir Benjamin Hall. He was a tall man, whose nickname was Big Ben.

Downing Street If you go down Whitehall (a wide street leading from Parliament Square to Trafalgar Square) you will see a small street where the British Prime Minister lives. He lives at number 10 Downing Street.
