2 Illuminated Manuscripts  An illuminated manuscript is a manuscript in which the text is supplemented by the addition of decoration (in the letters, borders, or miniature illustrations).  Earliest surviving illuminated manuscripts are from the gothic period (400-600 ce) primarily in Ireland, Constantinople, and Italy.  The majority of surviving manuscripts are from the Middle Ages.  The majority of Illuminated Manuscripts are religious in nature (often created by Monks).  The Process is long and expensive so only the wealthy could afford them. http://www.newworldencyclopedia.org/entry/Illuminated_manuscript
