What is a global language? A global language is a language that is used and learned by a large percentage of the world population It is often used to facilitate communications about academic, diplomatic, and econcomic concerns There have been several global languages in the past ages Latin was used in the Roman Empire French was used in diplomatic discussions of the 18 th century

What is a global language (Part 2) A global language is often learned as a second language English is used officially in over 60 countries

Why is there a global language? A global language is used for diplomatic and economic purposes Increasing globalization requires an international language of business

What makes English special? English is the language of technology 80% of the information electronically stored is in English 2/3 of the world’s scientist use English More specifically, English is the language of the internet Programming is based upon and uses a large number of English words

What makes English special? (Part 2) A large number of academic material is only available in English Many manuals and textbooks have been primarily printed in English Learning English is often necessary to further one’s career

What about other languages? We are a long way off from the unification of languages Being bilingual and multilingual is inherently beneficial Anyone can benefit from learning English as a second language Those who speak English as a first language can still tremendously benefit from learning another language

What can we conclude from this? In these modern times, English can be considered a global language because of its inherent ties to technology and its uses in international business
