Guiding Principles Connect the subject material with student needs Create an open environment allowing for free flowing discussion Facilitate a “conversation” rather than giving a lecture Celebrate and welcome diverse opinions, ideas and comments Answer the student’s question, “What’s in it for Me?” (WIIFMs) Use stories to bridge the transition from information to knowledge to practical application Go forth and teach the subject … and sometimes use (your own) words 2016 Statewide Learning, Teaching & ICCOC Conference

What area(s) of the subject do they want/need to learn more? What concepts are important to them? What are their interests/hobbies? What teaching tools or techniques will enhance the learning environment and improve the overall academic experience? Guiding Principles Professional Put the textbook in one hand a newspaper in the other and you will touch most career challenges students face Role play work situations helps reinforce the concepts Discussions with peers help to reduce stress of presenting ideas to current work groups, supervisors, peers, etc. Presenting ideas in class helps build self confidence as one seeks to advance in their chosen field/profession Applying the ideas can lead to better job performance, promotions and clearer career goals (i.e., a better employee for the employer) 2016 Statewide Learning, Teaching & ICCOC Conference

Guiding Principles Purpose The effectiveness of a teacher is based on the readiness level of the student Demonstrate enthusiasm, passion and caring – the students are our legacy (a student is a reflection of the teacher and the teacher a reflection of the student. Do you like what you see when the class ends?) Treat students with dignity, respect, kindness, courtesy and compassion Use WIIFMs (“What’s in it for Me”) statements to enhance the concepts showing the importance of implementing these ideas When you do things from the heart, and be your normal self, you can make the greatest impact in the lives of others 2016 Statewide Learning, Teaching & ICCOC Conference

Guiding Principles In the End … When we create stars for our sky, our future looks brighter even on the darkest of nights because the tools that we have provided the astronomer helps provide a clearer vision There is no magic pixie dust. No chants. No hocus pocus. Just you, the text and the students. What you’ll create will be different each night. Because there are no two stars alike in the sky.
