reading, writing, maths and science To help with teacher assessment the DfE has produced ‘Interim Frameworks’. These are for 2015 -2016 only and they set out the standards a pupil will be assessed against in reading, writing, maths and science. All of the criteria must be met All of the criteria must be met for a child to attain the ‘Expected Standard’. This is a significant change from previous years. INTERIM FRAMEWORKS

WHAT WILL BE ASSESSED BY TESTS ? TESTS for YEAR 2 in 2016 READINGSPaG TEST 1 – combined reading prompt and answer booklet TEST 2 – more challenging separate reading booklet and reading answer booklet All children sit BOTH tests TEST 1 - Spelling TEST 2 – English, Punctuation, Spelling & Grammar Maths TEST 1 - Arithmetic TEST 2 - Reasoning In 2016 the tests will be marked internally by teachers and, in some cases, the results moderated by Local Authorities.

READING 2016 Interim Teacher Assessment Framework at end of KS1 - STA 2016

The most crucial aspects of reading at the end of Key Stage 1 are:- Accuracy (decoding familiar and unfamiliar words correctly) Accuracy (decoding familiar and unfamiliar words correctly) Fluency (speed and confidence)* Fluency (speed and confidence)* Comprehension (drawing meaning from text) Comprehension (drawing meaning from text) *DfE guidance for fluency is that if a child can read 90 words per minute this gives teachers an indication to support their judgement of what is meant by fluent reading. The inference seems to be that children who can read at such speeds will be able to meet the ‘Expected Standard’. READING SKILLS ASSESSED

SAMPLE READING TEST QUESTIONS Children will be asked to tick correct answers, they will be expected to find and retrieve facts and sometimes explain their answers. Reading Test 1 has combined text, questions and answers.

Reading Test 2 will have a more challenging separate reading booklet and reading answer booklet.

WRITING 2016 Interim Teacher Assessment Framework at end of KS1 - STA 2016

What is the ‘Expected Standard’ in writing? Children are expected to be able to write using a range of different genres. The DfE have issued guidance for schools. This guidance will apply for this year only.

NEW SPaG TEST 2016 Emphasis is placed on the technical aspects of grammar and there is a separate spelling test. There are no pictures in the SPaG test papers. Children will be asked to tick correct answers and will be expected to understand how to use tables.

English Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar They will also be asked to circle, insert and write correct answers.

MATHS 2016 Interim Teacher Assessment Framework at end of KS1 - STA 2016

SAMPLE MATHS TEST QUESTIONS - ARITHMETIC

SAMPLE MATHS TEST QUESTIONS - REASONING Some questions are read by the teacher. Look at the picture of Sam and Ben in question 5. Sam’s arm is fifty centimetres long. Ben’s arm is forty centimetres long. How much longer is Sam’s arm than Ben’s arm? Write your answer in the box.

SCIENC E 2016 Interim Teacher Assessment Framework at end of KS1 – STA 2016 For science pupils will be grouped into 2 categories. Working at the expected standard or a category for those pupils who do not meet the standard.

WHEN ARE THE TESTS? All KS1 tests will be held next week.

Some support can be given to children who have a Statement or an Educational Health Care Plan. Requests for additional time will be made by teachers using their knowledge of children and the children’s individual needs. Children who are unable to sit and work for a long period because of a disability or because of behavioural, emotional, or social difficulties may receive some support. Children with English as an additional language and who have limited fluency in English may receive some support. SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS & DISABILITIES

NO MORE LEVELS Children develop at different times and in individual ways, but at the end of Year 2 the DfE guidelines for English and maths are as follows:- WORKING TOWARDS the ‘Nationally Expected Standard’ for a pupil at the end of Year 2 WORKING AT the ‘Nationally Expected Standard’ for a pupil at the end of Year 2 WORKING AT GREATER DEPTH within the ‘Nationally Expected Standard’ for a pupil at the end of Year 2 Children working at the Pre Key Stage foundations of the ‘Nationally Expected Standard’ category for a pupil at the end of Year 2 For Science pupils will be grouped into 2 categories - Working at the expected standard, or a category for those pupils who do not meet the standard.

REPORTING RESULTS Children’s progress, as well as their achievement, will be measured and reported on in school performance tables. Teacher assessments will be passed on to Year 3 so the results can be used in planning for KS2 teaching. Written reports are given to parents at the end of the summer term along with their child’s results.

Do not put pressure on your child. Support with homework and targets that have been discussed at Parents Evening. Read regularly and discuss a variety of texts – not just ‘listening’ to your child read. Short bursts of mental maths, times tables and problem solving etc. Put simply, do what you are already doing and no more! HELPING AT HOME

Not mentioning the word ‘test’ to your child. We won’t! Don’t change any routines or attempt to ‘revise’ (They’re only 6/7!) Ask your class teacher if you would like more information. Don’t worry! All children are different and will develop at different rates. WE RECOMMEND:-

ANY QUESTIONS? ?

Junior School transfer We work extremely closely with the junior school to ensure the children have a smooth transfer to their new school. At the request of CKJS we mix the children into new classes in Y3. If you have anything that you feel would be useful for your class teacher to know when mixing the children please write it down and hand it to your class teacher. Some example of the transfer activities that will take place next term. -KS1 Sports on the CKJS field -Y2 photography projects at CKJS -Shared art project between Y2/3 -Visit from CKJS teachers to CKIS -Individual visits to CKJS for pupils who may need extra support
