3 How to Analyze - Before the Speech
Did the speaker’s introduction create interest in the speech Why this speaker? Why this topic? Why this time? How was the speakers body language as he/she approached the lectern The speech as far as evaluation is concerned starts even before the speech. Since we write our introductions. How well has the speaker crafted the introduction? If build up your introduction appropriately it could transition into your speech very nicely! How did the speaker walk up to the lectern. Did he have energy? Presidents Club Toastmasters

4 How to Analyze - Speech Objectives
What is the speaker’s goal? Educate Persuade Inspire Entertain What is the message? Was the objective achieved? How do you analyze a speech? There is so much being said in 5-7 minutes. What you need to watch for? If you get too pulled into a speech you will not be able to listen critically. What is the speakers goal? What type of speech is he or she going to deliver? What is the message? Every speech should have a message. Even an entertaining speech should have an underlying message. Did the speaker achieve the objective and how well did the speaker do that? Presidents Club Toastmasters

5 How to Analyze - During the Speech
Content: Was there something new you learned How well did the content support the message Should something else have been included (or cut) to enhance the message What do you look for in the speech? There are three major groups. Content, Organization and Delivery. Michelle Nogin called it the “take away”. Was it worth my time? How well did the content support the message. If the speaker is giving an informative speech, does his contents information support the message. Is the speech well honed? Take away superfluous information or stories! Or add to make the message stronger. Presidents Club Toastmasters

6 How to Analyze - During the Speech
Organization: Did the speech have a strong opening (joke, story, question, quote) Was the speech laid out logically and easy to understand Was the speech focused- arguments, anecdotes and stories relate to the objective and message Were transitions from one point to another smooth Was the conclusion memorable? Was there a call to action? Speech Organization: Did the opening catch your attention? The other day I walked into a bar and saw this man ..Have you walked into a bar and seen a man? Was the speech organized logically? 2-3 main points in the body of the speech with supporting contents. Were the stories relevant to the message? How well did the speaker transition from one point to the other? Who did it end? Memorable? Did it have an impact? In my opinion the most commonly used phrase, “Its not how you start, its how you finish” has special relevance. Presidents Club Toastmasters

7 How to Analyze - During the Speech
Delivery: Did the speaker show energy and enthusiasm Visual Aids - Was it well designed? Did it complement the speech? Movement on the Stage Eye Contact Facial Expressions Gestures Vocal Variety, Pauses Language How was the speech delivered? Energy and enthusiasm will connect a speaker to an audience. Visual aids – were they necessary, appropriate and well designed? Movement – did the speaker use the stage? Moved with purpose. Was the speaker confident. Were they making eye contact? How about gestures, expressions, vocal variety, pauses for effect, any distracting mannerisms. Did the language clear. Did he use short sentences, Did the speaker use rhetorical devices? Repetition, Alliteration, Rule of three. Presidents Club Toastmasters

8 How to Analyze - Intangibles
How did the speech make you feel? Were you convinced? Were there any original ideas or techniques? Presidents Club Toastmasters

9 Preparing for the Evaluation
Prior to speech ask speaker about their objectives and special concerns Use an Evaluation Template List observations in two columns (1) Strengths (2) Recommendations Consider the Speakers Skill Level New Speakers – be gentle Experienced Speakers – don’t be brutal Speakers may have additional objectives over and above those listed in the manual. Ask the speaker about any objectives they want you to look for. A speaker may be trying something experimental. It is good to be aware of this so that you are not critical about something they are experimenting with. Many templates are available use one that works best for you. Be very encouraging with newer speakers. Give more detailed evaluation for experienced evaluators. Presidents Club Toastmasters

10 Delivering an Evaluation
Did the speaker achieve the objectives in the manual? When critiquing be specific: I like this because….give examples I think you could have done this differently … give examples Be Truthful – don’t say you liked a speech if you didn’t! Don’t evaluate the message! Presidents Club Toastmasters

11 The Sandwich Technique
Don’t waste time rehashing what the speaker said Begin the evaluation focusing on what you liked. Praise the speaker! Focus on areas of improvements – general areas the speaker can improve Specific suggestions on what to work on Closing comments - Motivate the Speaker! Presidents Club Toastmasters

12 “Whitewashed” Evaluation
Whitewashed evaluations can happen from a less experienced evaluator. Unfortunately there is no meat in the sandwich! All praise, no areas of improvement No specific suggestion Presidents Club Toastmasters

13 “All Criticism” Evaluation
“your gestures could be better” “you should work on your eye contact” “your power point graphics could have been better” Avoid at all cost! Presidents Club Toastmasters
