Learners complete exercise tasks and can amend work when errors are made

Derbyshire County Council Children and Younger Adults Department Updated August 2010 9 Course Material Course manuals and tasks are provided for use in the classroom and the tutor will keep completed printed work to send off for certification as evidence Where possible handouts and copies of instruction booklets will be issued and the tutor will inform you if these can be taken away from the centre

Derbyshire County Council Children and Younger Adults Department Updated August 2010 11 Course Feedback During the year you may be asked to complete evaluations, either online or paper based. These will give you the opportunity to comment on equipment, resources, facilities, learning etc. The comments are then handed firstly to the patch programme manager and then to the curriculum programme manager who will take your comments on board.

Ring the main telephone number at the Centre. All centres have answering machines on reception. Ask another learner on the course to give your tutor a message. If you are absent for more than three weeks then you need to notify the centre of this in writing to reserve your place.

Derbyshire County Council Children and Younger Adults Department Updated August 2010 13 Centre Policies No Smoking – all DCC buildings have a No Smoking policy. You may go outside to have a cigarette if necessary. No Eating or Drinking in the classroom – drinking facilities and eating areas are available within the centre. Please ask if you are unsure where they are located. Mobile phones need to be switched off or muted whilst in the classroom.

Derbyshire County Council Children and Younger Adults Department Updated August 2010 14 Fire Procedure On hearing the fire alarm: Do not panic Leave the building by the nearest exit Report to the assembly point – as informed by your tutor Get your name checked against the register, which your tutor will have. Do not go home without telling your tutor as someone may go into the building to find you.

Derbyshire County Council Children and Younger Adults Department Updated August 2010 15 Health Accidents Please report any accidents, no matter how small to your tutor or centre staff who are required to complete an accident form. First aid boxes are provided within the centre and there are designated first aid trained staff. Please report any defects you find immediately. First Aid If you feel unwell, please report this to your tutor. Please ensure the Centre is aware of anything which may affect your health when you enrol or which we need to be aware of (for example if you carry an inhaler for asthma).

Financial hardship should not be a barrier to learning. Through the Access Fund the service is able to support learners finding it hard to meet the cost of exam fees. Ask for an application form and guidelines. Be prepared to give brief details of your financial circumstances.

Derbyshire County Council Children and Younger Adults Department Updated August 2010 17 Childcare See the DCC Learner Guide for details on how to apply for creche places where available Financial assistance may be available to help where learners are finding it hard to meet the cost of childcare Crèche facilities may only be available on certain days/times and at certain centres

Derbyshire County Council Children and Younger Adults Department Updated August 2010 18 Additional Learning Needs See the DCC Learner Guide for further details The service can provide support workers, special equipment etc to help individuals to undertake their chosen course. Needs are individual and you will need to talk to your tutor who can also arrange for you to see a support worker who will discuss your needs with you. This may already be in progress from your enrolment form.

You may want help or to improve your Maths, Spelling, Reading etc. These courses are free! The courses go up to Level 2 (GCSE)

Derbyshire County Council Children and Younger Adults Department Updated August 2010 20 Information, Advice and Guidance See the DCC Learner Guide for further details Centre staff can give you information and leaflets on further courses Your tutor and Programme Manager can give you more details about our courses, including progression routes at any of our centres Our IAG Worker can offer you a free, confidential one-to-one interview about career and work opportunities etc. A leaflet for this is contained in the Learner Guide and this tells you how you can arrange an interview.

It roughly follows the holidays of local schools. In case of bad weather e.g. snow – please ring the centre to ensure your class is still running. If possible cancellations are announced on Radio Derby 104.5, 95.3 or 96FM.
