Adults: Adult beetles are a bright metallic green in color. Adults are one third inch long and one sixteenth inch wide. They have rounded abdomens and flat backs and are present from mid-May through late July. THE BUG

Where Does EAB Come From, And How Did It Get Here? Emerald ash borers are not native to North America. Until recently, they were found only in parts of Asia. These destructive insects arrived from Asia in packing material made from ash wood. Although they were first detected in Detroit in June, 2002, EAB probably arrived there 10 to 12 years before they found.

How Do EAB Infestations Spread? Natural Spread On its own, EAB moves slowly through the landscape, only about half of a mile per year. Human-Assisted Spread People greatly accelerate EAB's expansion when they move infested ash firewood and logs to new areas. EAB infestations outside of the Detroit area are the result of people moving ash firewood, nursery stock, and logs. EAB larvae can easily hitchhike a ride to new areas under the bark of infested firewood.

There are approximately 147 million ash trees in Indiana forests and at least 2 million more in urban areas lining streets, in yards, and in parks. Ash has been widely over-planted as a street tree because it tolerates adverse conditions and is resistant to native pests and diseases. Identifying Ash Trees Ash trees have branches that grow opposite of each other (think of how your arms are oriented). If the branches are staggered or alternate, the tree is not an ash tree. Older ash trees have diamond-patterned bark, although this may not be apparent in young trees.
