UNDERSTANDING THE NITTY-GRITTY DETAILS: RULES FOR INTERPRETING A TEXT STUDENT LEARNING WORKSHOP #3

THE READING PROCESS Pre-reading Active Reading Post-Reading

WHAT IS POST-READING? Post-reading is what readers do after they have finished the text to enhance understanding and enable long-term retention. Helps readers to “fill in the blanks” by checking knowledge, finding answers, and taking additional notes to integrate lecture notes with book notes to form complete study guides to increase vocabulary

FIVE POST-READING QUESTIONS AND SOME APPLICATIONS

1. WHAT DO I THINK WERE THE MOST IMPORTANT IDEAS IN THIS READING SELECTION? WHY?

APPLICATION OF RULE 1: DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN THE MAIN IDEAS AND THE SUPPORTING DETAILS Directions : Choose one of the following strategies (Consult the pdf version of the handout on “Differentiating Main Ideas from Supporting Details.”) STRATEGY #1: Ask Questions That Help Identify Main Ideas and Supporting Details in Essays and Articles STRATEGY #2: Identify Presentation Patterns In A Textbook STRATEGY #3: Identify Supporting Details First STRATEGY #4: Use Concept Maps

2. WHAT WAS UNCLEAR TO ME? WHY?

APPLICATION OF RULE #2: USE SELF- MONITORING Directions : Consult handout on “Self-Monitoring” Stop after every section of the assigned reading in a textbook and summarize what you read. Then write the summary of the reading selection using your own words.

3. WHAT QUESTIONS DO I NEED TO ASK TO CLARIFY WHAT I READ? LIST THEM.

APPLICATION OF RULE #3: USE SELF- TALK Directions : Follow the sequence of steps below (Consult Handout on “Self-talk”) 1.When you reach a point when your reading is confusing to you, stop for a moment, and mark this on your text. Think to yourself, “What is this trying to tell me? How does this relate to the previous information?” 2.Begin re-reading the previous passage, followed by the one you are struggling with. Does it make sense now? 3.Reflect for a moment and consider, “What might the writer tell me next?” Look for clues to identify where you believe the reading might be heading. 4.Read the next section of your text to see if your prediction was correct. If it wasn’t, how was it different? Why was it different? Review your clues. 5.Return to the confusing passage and write a short summary of the content.

4. WHAT DO I THINK IS MOST IMPORTANT TO WORK ON MEMORIZING FOR THIS COURSE? WHY?

APPLICATION OF RULE #4: USE MEMORY ENHANCEMENT TECHNIQUES Directions : Choose one of the following strategies below. (Consult handout on “Using Memory Enhancement Techniques”) STRATEGY #1: Create a Personal Memory Strategy— Selective Memorization Strategy #2: Use Auditory Memory Strategies Strategy #3: Use Visual and Kinesthetic Memory Strategies Strategy #4: Create Rhymes, Jingles, Songs Strategy #5: Create a Sentence Strategy #6: Create Acronyms and Initialisms Strategy #7: Create a Cross-word Puzzle Strategy #8: Use a Pathway to Learning

5. HOW DOES THE READING RELATE TO THE CLASS LECTURES?

APPLICATION OF RULE #5: STRUCTURE YOUR NOTE-TAKING Directions : Consult the handout on “Structured note- taking” When assigned a reading, you can use this four- columned chart--or create one yourself. The columns will help you create good notes you can use for review. Annotate the text first with these ideas in mind. After reading a section or chapter, you should then fill in the chart.

STRUCTURED NOTE-TAKING CHART Citation: Main Ideas : (What are the big ideas of the reading?) Explanatory Information : (How are the main ideas explained?) Support : (How are the main ideas supported? statistics, examples, testimonies, etc.) Connect : (How does this connect to other ideas/readings from the course, answer questions you have, or relate to personal experiences?)

QUIZ Practice the five rules for post-reading promoted in this module in one section from a chapter in the textbook of your Quest course. Apply one of the strategies for each rule to the interpretation of your textbook section. Within one week of having completed this module, turn in your response to your Quest tutor with your name, date, workshop number, Quest professor, and Quest course name at the top. You may email your responses in pdf to your Quest tutor. Complete the post-workshop survey at http://www.tjc.edu/info/2003886/academic_support_ser vices/38/quest_classroom/3. http://www.tjc.edu/info/2003886/academic_support_ser vices/38/quest_classroom/3 Note: Students who do not complete both the quiz and the survey will not receive credit for completing the workshop module.
