1. Key Stage 1 SATs Information Meeting

2. What are they? Statutory Assessment Tests are taken at the end of every Key Stage (i.e. Year 2, 6 and 9). These tests are used to assess your child’s attainment before they transfer to the next Key Stage. They also allow us to assess the progress that they have made since they started school. The tests will be undertaken independently. I am allowed to help to a small extent, for instance reading questions, however the children must complete the tests on their own. NEW FOR 2016!

3. When will they be taken? Year 2 SATs can be taken at any point in May Your child will be taking the SATs over the course of 1 week, beginning 9 th May. The tests will take place in the mornings, with afternoon lessons continuing as normal The tests are allowed to be taken in small groups or 1:1 if needed Breaks can be taken if needed

4. Reading Tests 2 papers, which take approximately 30-40 minutes each. One is designed to be more challenging than the other, but all children take both tests. Consists of reading a text and answering questions Your child is used to answering questions about stories and texts, we have also been doing some Reading Comprehension activities in class, so they will be very familiar with what they need to do.

5. There is no test for Writing, this will be Teacher Assessed

6. Maths Tests 2 papers; Arithmetic and Reasoning Arithmetic paper: approximately 20 minutes, purely calculation, no resources allowed. Reasoning paper: approximately 35 minutes, includes aural questions, consists of word problems relating to all other aspects of Mathematics, i.e. Number and Place Value, Shape, Measures, Data Handling, Problem Solving. No resources allowed unless if specifically needed e.g. a mirror or ruler We have been looking at past paper questions, so the children will be familiar with the layout and types of questions they will be asked.

7. Marking and Results The tests will be marked by myself using a mark scheme, then moderated along with other Year 2 teachers in the County. Results are simple a Pass or Fail for each subject. We do not need to report results to parents, however if you would like to know your child’s results I will happily tell you. Summer Report: I will indicate your child’s attainment and effort based on my own Teacher Assessment, THIS is the most important thing Teacher Assessment: Teachers constantly gather evidence about pupil performance. This on-going assessment is more reliable than tests which are a ‘snapshot’ of achievement. Not all children will achieve their best in the tests and some may excel. Teacher assessment helps to create a balanced picture.

8. How can you help your child? Make sure they don’t panic! The last thing I want is for the children to feel worried or stressed about the SATs. I will NOT be telling them it’s the SATs, they are used to working independently. Continue to help your child at home as you normally do, i.e. Reading with them and asking questions, practising spellings (plus putting them into sentences), and Maths work. Ensure they get a good night’s sleep and a good breakfast in the morning!
